Football Thoughts Some thoughts after the Iowa State game, from Saturday and looking ahead

I have to start off and talk about watching history.

I have been going to KU games since I was in middle school. There are some that will always stick out. The 1984 win over Oklahoma when KU won when the Sooners started Troy Aikman at quarterback. I was at the game in 1991 when Tony Sands broke the NCAA single game record. The failed two-point conversion game against Nebraska in the final minutes that would have snapped a long losing streak in 1992. I made the road trip to Norman in 1995 when KU hammered Oklahoma both teams were in the Top 15. Watching KU win a BCS Bowl game in Miami.

But I will always remember the Iowa State game and the carry where Devin Neal broke the school's all-time rushing record. That is going to be a record that stands for a long time and may never be broken. Players good enough to do that don't stick around long enough whether it means the NFL or enter the portal.

I feel fortunate to be able to have followed Devin Neal from his recruiting through his career. When people ask me what I remember most about Devin Neal playing football will have a slight edge over Devin Neal as the person. The one thing that has always stood out to me is how Neal carries himself off the field. He is always smiling and so polite and respectful. I have gotten to know his family and I see where he gets it from. I will always remember the play where Neal lined up in the gun and took a handoff from Daniels. Bryce Cabeldue was pulling to the right and Neal looked like he changed direction instead of following that lead block cut it to the left, picking up a first down and the all-time record.

The biggest takeaway I came away from Saturday is Jeff Grimes put a clown suit on Jon Heacock. I thought KU exploited weaknesses that ISU didn't know they had. Iowa State is down some players and they don't have the athletes to stop what KU does when it is clicking. And yesterday it was clicking. The Jayhawks had all facets of their offense clicking and when that happens you don't know what to defend. KU puts you in so many bad situations you have to choose what to stop. But Iowa State was still a defense who entered the game only giving up 15.5 points a game. 532 yards and 45 points later KU made it look easy.

I know the defense gave up some yards and points but I felt during the stretch of the game that was the deciding factor they played well. There was a stretch in the first half and to start the third quarter the defense forced three punts, two field goals and a turnover on downs during six straight drives.

I have been saying through the losing streak this a good football team. But I know that is hard for football fans to see because the end result were several close losses. The fact is KU is a good football team. Even if they are 3-6. They are the team right now nobody in the conference wants to play.

I will have more thoughts on BYU later, but I watched the game last night. They are a tough team and just went through a very physical game with Utah. That Utah defense is really good. BYU had some key injuries and I will follow that this week. They lost two OL and a good corner. Those are just the ones I saw. But BYU will be ready to play in a night game with a sold out stadium. This is a game KU can win.

Kansas Duo Earns Big 12 Weekly Honors

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas center Hunter Dickinson and guard Zeke Mayo have earned Big 12 men's basketball weekly honors announced Monday. Dickinson is the Big 12 Player of the Week, while Mayo is the co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in a vote by a media panel which covers the league.

Dickinson opened the week with 16 points, six rebounds and a career-high-tying three steals in 21 minutes in the 87-57 win versus Howard. In the 92-89 win against No. 9 North Carolina, the graduate center from Alexandria, Virginia posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three assists. With the KU-UNC game tied at 89-89 with 1:44 to play, Dickinson would score the final three points of the contest with a basket and later a free throw with 17 seconds remaining. It was Dickinson's 49th career double-double.

This is the seventh Big 12 weekly honor for Dickinson who was a Big 12 Player of the Week twice and a three-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week last season while at Kansas. Career-wise, this is the sixth time Dickinson has been named his league's player of the week.

Mayo came off the bench in both Kansas wins. Against Howard, the Lawrence, Kansas senior scored 19 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range with four rebounds. In the win against North Carolina, Mayo led Kansas with 21 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. He was also 4-for-4 from the line against UNC. Down 87-85 with 3:15 to play, Mayo scored four of Kansas' final seven points in the contest, including a basket with 1:44 left to tie the game at 89-89. Mayo won the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week along with BYU's Egor Demin.

A transfer from South Dakota State, this marks the sixth weekly award for Mayo in his college basketball career and his first while at Kansas.

No. 1 Kansas (2-0) will play Michigan State (2-0) in the 2025 Champions Classic, Tuesday, Nov. 12, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Football Thoughts Early thoughts on the matchup with BYU

I have watched BYU as much or more than any team in the Big 12 this year. They are a fun team to watch.

I would say their biggest strength is the effort and downhill style they play at. They are aggressive on both sides of the ball and they are more of a north-south team in my opinion.

On offense, they remind me a lot of what KU does. I don't think they are as explosive as KU is, but they make you defend everything. It all starts with their quarterback Jake Retzlaff who is a gamer. He's fun to watch. If there was a Big 12 QB I would compare him to, it would be Jalon Daniels. He doesn't have the arm strength of Daniels and doesn't have the speed. But he gets the job done throwing and running.

BYU will mix in option and Retzlaff will take off running at any time. They use a lot of motion and do many of the things KU uses to keep defenses off balance and multiple. They make you defend the whole field. They use play-action and a lot of misdirection plays. Retzlaff is their highest rated player at 83.8 by PFF on offense.

They have the second ranked scoring offense in the league but only the 9th by yardage. Their RB are solid but not as good as Neal and Hishaw. They are averaging 163 yards on the ground but don't have any player in the top 25 among the Big 12. LJ Martin missed some time with injury and he's their best RB but they use #7 who is like a heat seeking missile with his running. He's shorter but well built.

The OL is solid but something to keep an eye on... they lost two key players in the Utah game. Austin Leausa (G) and Brayden Keim (T) left and did not come back in the game. They have a little over 1000 snaps between them. The WR are solid with Darius Lassiter (brother of former KU WRs) and Chase Roberts, more of a possession receiver.

Defensively they love to bring the pressure and let their linebackers roam the field. Their LB stand out when watching them.

Isaiah Glasker- (77.3)
Harrison Taggart- (75.6)
Jack Kelly- (68.6)

Those LB are active and score well by PFF grades.

I don't think BYU is as strong in the middle of the defense. I like Tyler Batty at DE, but in the games I have watched I thought he was more active last year. Another injury to watch is Marque Collins one of their top corners. He went out against Utah and didn't go back in.

Watching the defense they mix it up and will blitz. They are aggressive and try not to let offenses get comfortable. Last year I thought they were disciplined and well-schooled. They played the option with Daniels well and if you remember they were beating KU at half in Lawrence 17-14. Kenny Logan changed the game with a pick six.

BYU's last home game was October 18th and it will be close to a month since their last appearance in Provo. Their crowd will be rocking. They have one of the best atmospheres in the league. The one common denominator I see every time I watch BYU is their effort. They always look to be playing at max effort level. I think this going to be a close game. Not ready to make any prediction but the Jayhawks will be going into a tough place to play in a time zone change with the 9:15 CST kickoff.

ISU Fans and Band

can eff themselves. Never seen such backwards ass parking from a group (one vehicle taking up 3 spots, not knowing North from South, etc. The band playing right up to the snap and the boo birds were horrendous. My 8 yr old learned cuss words I hadn’t even taught him, which is impressive.
