Kardell Catch

Haven’t seen it discussed much, but how about Kardell’s catch on the third down late in the fourth quarter. Gave us the first down and ultimately led to the TD to give us 49.

Extremely important play and probably don’t win without it.

Glad to see TEs being used a lot yesterday (Fairchild with a TD early on). I wonder if JD looks to them more or if it was more specific to the UT gameplan.

News and Notes Devin Neal Big 12 Off POW

November 15, 2021

🏈 Devin Neal Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas freshman Devin Neal has been named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the Conference Office announced on Monday, becoming the first Kansas freshman to ever win the award.

Neal propelled the Jayhawks to a dramatic 57-56 win over the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, rushing 24 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Neal also scored through the air on a 19-yard pass from Jalon Daniels. Neal finished with two receptions for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Neal’s impressive showing makes him the first player in college football this season to have 140+ rushing yards, three-plus rushing touchdowns, 25+ receiving yards and at least one receiving touchdown in the same game. He is the first player since Tulane’s Cameron Carroll (Sept. 26, 2020) and first true freshman since Tulane’s Matt Forte in 2004 to accomplish such a feat.

Neal, of Lawrence, Kansas, is also the first Jayhawk to have three rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in the same game since at least 2000.

While becoming the first Kansas true freshman to win the award, Neal is just the 10th Jayhawk to ever be named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the week and the first since Carter Stanley won the award in 2019 for his 415 yards passing and three touchdowns against Texas Tech.

Through 10 games this season, Neal leads the Jayhawks in rushing with 648 yards and seven touchdowns on 144 attempts. Neal has recorded three games of over 100 yards, coming against Duke (107), Oklahoma (100) and Texas (143).

Underdiscussed keys from Saturday

11-17 on third down conversions.

Only four penalties.

No turnovers.

When you keep their defense on the field, don't give them free yards and don't give them the ball for nothing, your chances of winning go up. Especially the third down conversion number--that has been a consistent problem for KU teams in the past and again this year.

OT: Chili with Cinnamon Rolls

I keep seeing a thread called ' Volleyball Arena' and forget it morphed into Chili and Cinnamon Rolls. Therefore, this needs to be on its own merits.

Therefore, please provide all your recipes, even canned options. The Hy Power Tamales @DocTwo were actually pretty good! Chili is basically good until we start talking Corned Beef & Gabbage with Cornbread with Honey Butter for St. Patrick's Day. Possible topics may also include Christmas Dinner and New Year's Eve and Day food types!

Jalon Daniels up for Manning Star of the Week

Daniels Named Finalist for Manning Star of the Week

Vote
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has been named one of eight Manning Award Stars, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Monday morning.
Fans will now have the opportunity to vote for Daniels to be named the Manning Award Player of the Week through the Sugar Bowl’s Facebook page.

The sophomore from Lawndale, California was brilliant in his team’s 57-56 overtime win over Texas on Saturday night in Austin. Making his first start of the season, Daniels completed 21 of 30 passes for 202 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 11 times for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Daniels became the first Kansas quarterback since Todd Reesing in 2008 to pass for three touchdowns and rush for another. The quarterback is also the first Kansas signal-caller to have a completion percentage of at 70 on at least 30 attempts with no turnovers since Carter Stanley did it in 2018. He is the first Jayhawk quarterback to do it on the road since Michael Cummings in 2014.

He also became just the third Kansas quarterback since 2000 to pass for three touchdowns, rush for one and not throw any interceptions joining Jordan Webb (2011) and Bill Whittemore (2003).

Against Texas, Daniels threw three touchdowns to three different players with receiver Kwamie Lassiter II, tight end Mason Fairchild and running back Devin Neal all hauling one in. Daniels also scored on a 9-yard rush late in the second quarter to give Kansas a seven-point lead.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 424 different quarterbacks from 129 schools have been recognized. Seventy-three players from 66 different schools were honored during the 2020 season.

Daniels is the first Manning Star of the Week since Carter Stanley in 2019.

Opposite end zone view of the two point play

Posted by @HTownJayhawk in the Casey thread. Cool celebration.

But, pause the video at the 18 second mark. Try to look at what Daniels was seeing. Two guys in his face, another mid level defender to throw over, and not a huge window. That's a throw the good QBs make. The throw we havent seen in a while.

My 5,000th Post

This is my 5,000th post here on the Slant, of which 4,994 have been here on the football board. My favorite post I think by far was my prediction in March of 2020 that Covid would be out of the news cycle in 2 weeks. Nailed it! But anyway, it's been a lot of fun hanging out with you folks and sharing our love and hatred of KU football.

Some of my favorite moments over the years:

The EJ Biggers recruiting drama (this was my introduction to the stupidity that is recruiting)
Maize's drunken meltdown
Hakwdoc's recruiting prediction threads
The whole dauncle/Twister mess
Bryson's airport Periscope adventure
Coaching search after coaching search
I'm sure there are more I'm missing

Thanks to JK for putting up with all of our nonsense, and here's hoping for 5,000 more posts of questionable worth and quality.
