Agbaji & Groves Earn Season's First Men's Basketball Honors

Kansas' Ochai Agbaji (player) and Oklahoma's Tanner Groves (newcomer) picked up the season's first Big 12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week awards after leading their teams to a 2-0 start. The honor is the second for Agbaji in his career.

Agbaji opened the season scoring a career-high 29 points in Kansas' 87-74 win against Michigan State in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden. The Kansas City, Missouri, guard answered that scoring 25 points in the home-opening win versus Tarleton State. His 54 points were the most for a Jayhawk in the Bill Self era in the first two games of a season. He surpassed Frank Mason III's 51 points to open the 2016-17 campaign. The two 20-point efforts marked the eighth and ninth 20-point games of Agbaji's career.

Groves led Oklahoma in scoring in both victories over Northwestern State and UTSA as he was the first Sooner to tally 20-plus points in a game this season. He averaged 18.0 points per contest, which tied for fourth in the Big 12 last week, along with 7.0 defensive rebounds, which rank fourth in the Conference and third among teams that played two games. He finished the week 15-of-25 for a .600 field goal percentage and was one of two Big 12 players to attempt 25 or more shots and have a .600 or higher FG percentage.

Big 12 Player of the Week
Ochai Agbaji, Kansas, G, Sr.

Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
Tanner Groves, Oklahoma, F, Sr

Its all about the opponent

We've played three soft/unengaged teams. Duke, OU, and Texas. Leading at half of all three, 69-35, average of 23-12.

Three mid level tough/talented/engaged teams: Coastal, Tech, and KSU. Trailing at half of all three, 73-18, ave of 24-6.

Three smack in you the mouth, totally engaged teams, Baylor, ISU, and oSu. Trailed 90-7 @ half, ave 30-2. Baylor was a lot better at half than I remember.

Points I take from this.
1) Kids are getting coached right. They are given the tools to make plays and are in the right spots when not totally physically overwhelmed.

B) it's going to be a few years of consistancy with the practices and S&C to get there. Hopefully in a couple years we can consistently compete with the middle group. Illinois in 23 might be a great test of this.

3) dont overreact if TCU & WV come ready to play. This team wont have just had success and quit on the year. They wont still be drunk on success of last week. The coaches wont suddenly be idiots. We are still only 6 months into a 5/6 year process.

Possible visit from 3-Star 2023 FL RB Joquez Smith

In an update interview with Rivals, Joquez Smith covered ground on the teams he'd like to visit coming up, Kansas was covered. The Jayhawks have offered Smith.

KANSAS IS CHEEZ-IT BOWL NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK
Jayhawks stun Texas in OT to end Big 12 road drought

DALLAS (FWAA) – The Kansas Jayhawks scored the most points in a road game in program history, stunning Texas 57-56 in overtime to earn their first conference road win since 2008 and their first ever in Austin. For its touchdown on the first overtime possession and then completing its two-point conversion to win, Kansas earned the Cheez-It Bowl National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Nov. 13, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.

This is the fifth time for Kansas (2-8) to earn this honor from the FWAA and first since its last road win Sept. 13, 2019, when it toppled Boston College, 48-24. All Division I FBS and FCS schools are eligible to be selected.

Kansas trailed 56-49 when it took the ball in overtime. Freshman running back Devin Neal scored on a two-yard run to get within one, and following a timeout, quarterback Jalon Daniels found Jared Casey, a walk-on filling in at tight end due to an injury, for the two-point conversion and the win. The bold move completed a bold night for Daniels, who in his first career start threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

"I'm so proud of our guys," head coach Lance Leipold said. "They have been through so much. They battled, they kept believing in what we're doing. We let the lead slip away, but we talked about trying to finish and playing hard for 60 minutes. We did it and then some. I'm so proud of them and hopefully it's something we're going to build on."

Kansas' defense impacted the game with four takeaways. After yielding an initial 14-0 lead, the Jayhawks scored the final 21 points of the half in a 2:25 span helped by two turnovers, the second of which was a 31-yard pick-six interception by Jacobee Bryant that gave KU a 35-14 halftime lead.

Kansas' last conference win on the road came at Iowa State, a 35-33 win Oct. 4, 2008. The 57 points are the Jayhawks' most since scoring 76 against Nebraska on Nov. 3, 2007.

The Jayhawks play at TCU at 3 p.m. CT Saturday on ESPN-Plus.

The other National Team of the Week nominees for the weekend of Nov. 13 are:
  • Baylor (8-2): A week removed from an upset loss at TCU, the Bears rebounded to topple previously unbeaten Oklahoma, 27-14, in Waco. Quarterback Gary Bohanon ran for a career-high 107 yards and two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass, but it was the Baylor defense that was the difference. The Bears held Oklahoma to just 260 total yards.
  • Georgia State (5-5): The Panthers earned their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in school history by stopping a two-point conversion attempt with 1:09 left to edge No. 22 Coastal Carolina, 42-40. The win snapped Coastal Carolina's 12-game home win streak. Playing in his hometown, GSU quarterback Darren Grainger passed for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Mississippi State (6-4): The Bulldogs, down 28-3 in the second quarter, rallied with 40 unanswered points and the largest come-from-behind win in school history with a 43-34 win over No. 16 Auburn. The largest comeback had been a 20-point rally earlier this season against Louisiana Tech. MSU's sixth straight win over Auburn earned the Bulldogs a bowl game for a 12th straight season, only the fourth SEC school to make that claim (Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M).
  • UTSA (10-0): Before their largest crowd of the year (30,105), the Roadrunners extended the best start in program history to a school-record 10th consecutive win in a 27-17 win over Southern Miss. UTSA's 10 wins and six conference wins are school records. The Roadrunners held Southern Miss to 189 yards, the fourth opponent that UTSA has held to fewer than 200 total yards this season.

Call me 411, cuz I'm feeling loko. KU 6th in Big 12????

Yes, I know it's not happening, BUT HEAR ME OUT ANYWAY

IF KU somehow wins these last 2 games (bottom 2 Big 12 teams, TCU doesn't have a coach, WVU is our Senior Night), we have a legit shot at tying for 6th in the Big 12.

We would be 3-6 with wins over Texas, TCU & WVU

Tech is 3-4 and still have OSU & @Baylor. Will be large underdogs in both games.

Texas is 2-5 with @WVU and KSU left. They are spiraling, could easily split those games.

TCU and WVU are both 2-5. If we beat them both, they best they could do is tie. TCU has @ISU, WVU has Texas.

Even if we just beat TCU. If TCU loses at Iowa State, they would tie us for 2-7 and we'd have the tie-breaker beating them head-to-head.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?!?!?!?

HC LL on ESPNU radio

Rick Newheisel and Chris Childers had LL on their show today. Highlights:

Great interview, both hosts very positive about KU, LL and the Admin support.

They replayed Jared Casey’s parents audio- so awesome.

LL said JD had “tired arm” in fall camp and had to sit out quite awhile. (I had not heard that).

LL said his talks with Mangino sold on the fact he could turn program around.

Great interview! We are very lucky to have LL.

SELF ON KU'S 2022 RECRUITING CLASS

"Overall, this is an outstanding recruiting class and I don’t think that we are done by any means. We went out to sign five and we got four. I feel great about these four because they are all impact players for us next year. Where we stand right now moving forward will depend on how this year’s team continues to develop and who returns based on the success of this season. I’m very excited about where we are at."
