EVERYTHING CHRISTIAN BRAUN SAID ON THURSDAY

Speaker 1:
Talk about you two being the dynamic duo right now.

Christian Braun:
Yeah, Och is playing great so I'm really happy to see him just confident and playing his game. We worked a lot in the summer. We got a couple weeks out in Arizona working out together. It's good seeing what he's worked on pay off, and he's doing great and he's opened up the floor for everybody on the team. So everybody would tell you, what Ochai's doing, it's really helping everybody out and opening up the floor for everybody. So we're proud of him and excited to see him keep going, but nobody's shocked anymore of what he's doing. It's kind of become Ochai's thing and that's who Ochai is now. So we're just going to keep following him.

Speaker 3:
[inaudible 00:00:37], you said the other night that this rivalry is obviously not just about your family and it's bigger than that and all that, but I wonder what that was like for you and what it's still like for you. I mean, some pretty important family members that had a pretty big role over there in black and gold. Did you learn about that growing up? Did you have to hear about it? Are you still hearing about it, and what's it been like for them to flip over here?

Christian Braun:
Yeah, they don't really let me stop hearing about it, to be honest. My Uncle Mike talks about himself all day, so I do hear about it a lot. I've heard about both sides. My dad's a big KU fan, always was. And then my dad is the only KU fan, and my mom and everybody else, my mom's side is Mizzou fans. My Aunt Robin ran track there. My Aunt Laurie played basketball there. My Uncle Mike played basketball there. So did my mom, so it was a big Mizzou family.

Christian Braun:
Going into it, me and my dad were always kind of on the other side, but I always tell people I was always on the winning side, I felt like. It feels good to be a winner, and that's kind of why I chose here. I never really looked over in Mizzou's direction even though my brother was there, so I never really looked their direction. I'm proud to wear Kansas and I'm going to be proud to get this win on Saturday.

Speaker 4:
What's done is done and your brother's gone, but is that disappointing? Would that have made this more fun or is that possible?

Christian Braun:
No, I'm really happy for him. He's doing really good at Santa Clara. Their team's great. I don't know if you guys have watched them, they're playing great. They're a fun team to watch and it fits more of his style. I know he learned a lot from Coach Martin at Mizzou and he made him grow as a person, but I'm excited for the opportunity that he has gotten at Santa Clara. He's doing great. They're getting a lot of big wins and honestly, they're playing really good basketball over there and that's something that he hasn't seen, so I'm excited for him. But yeah, this game on Saturday means a lot to me.

Speaker 4:
Where's his head this week, with you?

Christian Braun:
Oh, absolutely. Yeah, no. Yeah, my whole family ... I was telling somebody that the other day. All my uncles, all my aunts, they will all be in Kansas on Saturday. There's no question, they're all Kansas fans now that I'm here and we kind of give them something to cheer for.

Speaker 1:
I asked a couple of the guys the same question, I'll ask you. For you personally, after last year, not being able to have that same atmosphere, having it this year for especially a game like this, what does that mean to you? Just having that marquee game and the whole 16,000 [inaudible 00:03:05] all the fans back, what does that mean to you personally?

Christian Braun:
Yeah, I'm excited just to get the rivalry back. That means a lot to everybody. It means a lot to all the fans, but I'm really excited to get it back this year and have it in Allen for the first game just because the atmosphere, and everybody's going to be able to watch it, and there's going to be fans in the arena. I think that'll just make it 10 times better. So I'm excited just for the excitement on both sides. Both teams are going to be turned up and ready to play. They'll be really competitive. They got a good coach and they got good guys over there, so we're excited to play against them. And, like I said, they're going to compete just the same way we're going to compete, and it's going to be a good game.

Speaker 3:
Is this a game where you don't have to worry about effort?

Christian Braun:
Oh, no, no. You won't. Like I said, there'll be fans in the arena. Like I said, they got a good coach. They'll be turned up just as much as we're turned up because this rivalry means just as much to them as it does to us. So there won't be a lack of effort, for sure. But like I said, it'll be a great game. Both teams and programs are great.

Speaker 1:
What do you think it says about the rivalry in that we don't see each other for nine years and it's this intense still?

Christian Braun:
It says a lot. Like I said, it never really died to me, to be honest. I think that every year you would get those comments from people about KU and Mizzou, so I don't think the rivalry ever went away, but we just didn't play each other for a little bit. Like I said, the fact that we're going to get it back first game at Allen Fieldhouse is great. It won't be in Sprint so I think that environment will be a little bit better. I guess T-Mobile Center, but the environment will be a little bit better, you know? And Allen, it'll be loud. Yeah, there won't be a lack of effort, for sure. Everybody will be turned up and it'll be a great game.

Speaker 5:
All right, CB. Thank you.

Christian Braun:
Yep.

Speaker 3:
Thanks, CB.

Speaker 1:
Thanks, CB.

Slant TV with Chris Teahan, Christian Braun, and Ochai Agbaji

On Thursday afternoon, Chris Teahan, Christian Braun, and Ochai Agbaji met with the media to preview the Missouri game. The trio talked about facing the Tigers on Saturday, the last time Kansas and Missouri played, what to expect from the crowd, the feeling of the team heading into the game, and much more.

EVERYTHING OCHAI AGBAJI SAID ON THURSDAY

Speaker 1:
Ochai, there's a lot of Missouri floating around this weekend. And with this game [inaudible 00:00:08].

Speaker 1:
What's basketball like for you guys, focusing on it? And how hard is that to kind of separate the two and make sure you remember the other.

Ochai Agbaji:
Really, like I was talking about in the Sprint Center, just taking it game-by-game. This is just another game that we're preparing for, obviously, it's a big game, but we got to take it as another chance to get better. Preseason, moving into conference, just getting better every game.

Speaker 3:
Before a game like this, Ochai, obviously, there's KU/Mizzou and the rivalry's back after so long. I asked Chris the same question, seeing the students camp all the week and just seeing all the excitement around campus, what does that mean after last year not really having that marquee environment, now it's back. What does that mean for you?

Ochai Agbaji:
It's really special that it comes this early in the season. All the fans really get to get excited for something that's in the preseason. And also, it means a lot to both universities, but it means a lot to the fans and the whole program. So, I know they're excited and we're excited too.

Speaker 3:
Does it get the juices flowing seeing all the students camp? And [inaudible 00:01:12], I believe there's almost over 200 groups. I mean, does that get you guys fired up?

Ochai Agbaji:
I don't think I've ever seen that many campers out there for like ... since I've been here for any game, so it's really cool to see that.

Speaker 4:
So, what would you say to the people saying that the rivalry has kind of died down a little bit because we haven't played them?

Ochai Agbaji:
It is scheduling. It's not really our fault that, I mean they didn't schedule-

Speaker 4:
No, [inaudible 00:01:37]. Do you feel like hasn't died down?

Ochai Agbaji:
Oh. No. No, it hasn't died down. Coach still approached this game and approached preparing for this game as the rivalry that he approached back then, 2012. It's still beef between us, even though that we haven't played or anything like that. But it still means a lot for both schools, like I said.

Speaker 4:
To use his words, does Coach Self seem juiced?

Ochai Agbaji:
Mm-hmm (affirmative), yeah. He's juiced. He's amped, that's what you call it.

Speaker 5:
Ochai, you grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ochai Agbaji:
Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Speaker 5:
So, you probably had among your friends growing up a few Missouri fans.

Ochai Agbaji:
Yeah. Oh, my first friend when I moved to Kansas City was a Mizzou fan, and I didn't know anything better, so I was sided unfortunately with the Mizzou fans for a while, until I started getting recruited and I was just like, "It doesn't matter that way, so ..."

Speaker 6:
[inaudible 00:02:35], what have you seen from Mizzou? What do you think about they're going to bring to the city?

Ochai Agbaji:
It's a rivalry game. I know there's just a lot on the line here, so I know they're going to show up and play hard. I haven't seen much from them this year, but all I know is we've got to show up and respect them, and I know that they're going to come to play.

Speaker 7:
Ochai, do you have a favorite Mizzou/KU game that you watched growing up? And you're looking forward to, of course, making history in Kansas every game as a part of KU history.

Ochai Agbaji:
I actually really never paid attention to the games. I knew they were on, but I don't remember any significant moment from the rivalry. Yeah, no, I don't remember anything.

Speaker 8:
You talked about getting better every game. What do you think the biggest area that you guys are trying to do that in right now?

Ochai Agbaji:
Defensively.

Speaker 8:
Yeah.

Ochai Agbaji:
Defensively. Yeah. I think that's our main focus. Everyone knows that on the team, that defense is what's going to travel when we're on the road in the Big 12, stuff like that. So, we're just practicing, preparing for those games.

Speaker 8:
And a specific part of that, is there one defensive emphasis right now?

Ochai Agbaji:
Really just, when we get up on teams, keeping that lead, maintaining that lead and obviously increasing it, but also keeping that same defensive mentality because you know you can kind of lose that when everything's up here, and you're up by how-many points.

Ochai Agbaji:
But keeping that same focus defensively that we start the game off with, whether or not we go to the bench or keep the starting five in.

Speaker 8:
How do you work on that? I mean, is it just mental?

Ochai Agbaji:
Yeah. It's mental. More than anything I think it's mental, yeah.

Speaker 9:
Have you talked to Jalen Wilson much?

Ochai Agbaji:
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 9:
What do you think of how he's doing?

Ochai Agbaji:
I think he's doing really good. I mean he's had the best attitude ... since what he's gone through and all that, but he's just had the best attitude and just showing up every single day to just get better.

Speaker 10:
You and CB seem to be dominating things lately, kind of a Batman and Robin dynamic duo. Talk about that.

Ochai Agbaji:
You know, that's my boy. I know all the work he's put in, he knows the same thing about me, so we're just kind of feeding off each other's confidence right now. Really just going out there and playing at all time high levels of what we're trying to do, so ...

Speaker 11:
Thank you, Ochai.

Ochai Agbaji:
Thank you guys.

Group:
Thanks, Ochai.

Group:
Thanks, O.

EVERYTHING CHRIS TEAHAN SAID ON THURSDAY

Chris:
Wait, can you repeat that? I remember, but I kind of don't.

Speaker 2:
For you personally, you obviously have been here for a long time and seeing all the students amped for a game like this, what does that mean to you personally, as you're trying to, obviously get a win and more importantly, just having that atmosphere back?

Chris:
This game's obviously really exciting. Just the whole Mizzou, KU thing. I've been a Kansas fan of forever and we really haven't had a big atmosphere game like this in what year and a half, two years, really? If you think about it. So I think this will be something that's going to be a lot of fun. Allen's going to be electric that day. I think everyone who's playing will finally start to get a feel of what playing in Allen Fieldhouse really, really means.

Speaker 2:
Does it get the juices flowing when you see all the camping groups, I believe there's close to a hundred of them. I mean, does that kind of get you guys fired up, that like students are here and they're real excited?

Chris:
Oh yeah, that definitely does. I remember coming out of practice, or weights, or something on Monday and seeing everyone out there and just being shocked they were out there in general. So we're really excited for it. We're honestly thankful that they're coming out to support us, and I know they'll be rowdy on Saturday.

Speaker 2:
Chris, since you grew up with it a little bit and know more than a lot of people, especially your age, what's been missing with Missouri gone? I mean, can you put that into words? Do you have a feel for that?

Chris:
I don't know if I could put that into words, cause I still was pretty young, but I still remember, I went to school pretty much on state line of Kansas and Missouri. So I had a lot of Missouri friends and a lot of Kansas friends and we would always butt heads and there was some hatred there in my younger years, for sure. So I don't know if there's the hatred is missing or anything, but it's definitely something that's good to have back, always having your rivals and having that one game on your schedule, where the energy gets flowing. It really shows who you are.

Speaker 3:
Following up on that, Chris, do you have a game that you remember watching as a kid and like playing like, "Oh, I can't wait to do this in a game against Mizzou?"

Chris:
Oh yeah. So that last year when we played Mizzou, we went to Mizzou and ended up losing. I was at that game and the whole time, I was sitting there in the bleachers, like, "I wish we had another opportunity to go back and win" and that would've been, obviously, something that would've been great to do, is go to Mizzou and get to experience a hostile environment instead of experiencing the crowd, which is obviously going to be great, but it would've been a lot of fun to go to Mizzou and get to do what we're doing on Saturday.

Speaker 2:
How much have you looked at just as a team, their personnel, how you feel they're doing at this point?

Chris:
I've looked at em a decent amount, I mean obviously I'm on the red team. So my job is to get people, get our players ready for the game on Saturday. So I've watched a little bit of film and whenever I had the opportunity and they were on TV or ESPN Plus or whatever, I would always tune in and watch them. So I think they have a good team out there. They got a lot of talent and it'll definitely be fun to go over and scout them a little bit more.

Speaker 2:
Is this the type of game where you don't have to worry about effort?

Chris:
That's what I would assume, but coach Self is always going to coach effort. He's going to make sure that we aren't lacking and it is going to mean a lot to these guys. We're obviously pushing the importance of what it is. Mizzou and Kansas, and trying to let them know, "Hey, this is one of those games, you leave it all out there, regardless of the score or whatever."

Speaker 2:
Are they getting it? The guys that aren't from here and didn't have any experience with it as kids? I mean, are they getting it?

Chris:
Yeah, they're starting. They understand. We really, honestly, hadn't really talked about it, because obviously this season is you always want to focus on the next game and sky reports and stuff like that. So like in the last week, coach Self's kind of brought it up a couple times and you can tell in the serious in his voice, that this is for real.

Chris:
And I think everyone kind of understood, is starting to understand that. And I've obviously hyped it up being like, "This is going to be the greatest game of the year, blah, blah, blah." So I think they're starting to understand it a little bit more.

Speaker 2:
You had a couple guys, Jeron and DeMari in there the other night. Have you had any more throughout the week?

Chris:
Not yet. We had a off day yesterday, so we've kind of stepped back, but yeah, Shron was in there and he said some stuff and I just remember him being in all the KU, Mizzou games. So he definitely has some skin in the game. So it was nice to hear him talk about it.

Speaker 2:
All right, Chris. Thank you.

Chris:
Yep. Thank you guys.

Speaker 4:
Thanks, Chris.

EVERYTHING BILL SELF SAID ON THURSDAY

Bill Self:
Yeah. All right, have at it. Anybody?

Speaker 2:
Yeah, part of what I was trying to find out last night, with this gone for the last nine years, can you put into words what's been missing? I mean, have you thought much about that?

Bill Self:
Haven't thought about that at all. What's missing, obviously, for both teams is an anticipated game for fans and for players. But I haven't thought that deep about it in the last nine years. When we played them in the exhibition game, I did like that, the feeling of that much interest, good for our sport and good for both places. But I haven't given them much thought, other than that.

Speaker 3:
What do you think about their season?

Bill Self:
It's been up and down. They're obviously playing better and they really guarded the other night, holding the team to 44. And their schedule's been sneaky hard, going to Liberty is a hard, hard game. That would be hard for anybody. They had a really good win against SMU on neutral floor, and they got a really nice ball club. And I didn't make shots against Wichita State, but they played a good schedule, and they've been up and down. I think that we've been up and down too, but they'll play their best game on Saturday, and we're anticipating that. And I hope we do the same, but I know our guys will be excited to be out there. And obviously by the number of students camping out and stuff like that, it should be a pretty, pretty festive atmosphere.

Speaker 3:
Kind of to the point you just made, the times in your life [inaudible 00:01:59] as you call it, which is many, but the number of times that that has spilled over to our opponents and they have really risen to their level.

Bill Self:
Oh yeah. You know, people can say this, which it is true, that we have arguably one of the very best home courts there is. But, there's no arguing the fact that other opponents, other players, like playing in those environments as well. So, I think some times it brings out the best in others also. And we've certainly had some unbelievable epic games here in my tenure here, and I know going back to the beginning of time with this building. But, a game like this, I mean, I can remember playing K-State or Missouri, regardless of how the seasons are going, regardless of how stale we are, or how stale they may be at that particular juncture of the season, it just seems to go away on that one day. Now it doesn't guarantee you playing well, but it guarantees the energy level being well, being so high that gives you the best chance to play well.

Speaker 4:
What do you think is the one reason that schools are playing again?

Bill Self:
I don't know, times past, probably ... This has never been a situation about coaches versus coaches or players versus players. This was more about something that they did, obviously what they thought was best for us, and how it could have potentially affected us. I think, based on that move, obviously didn't sit well with everybody here. But that's a long time ago, but I don't know. Maybe the biggest reason is because Cuonzo and I wanted to play the game. So that's probably the biggest why we're playing.

Speaker 5:
Coach, do you have a favorite in [inaudible 00:04:01] game?

Speaker 2:
Well, the last game that we played here would probably be my favorite memory. The game before the last game we played here would probably be my least fondest memory. So, that's kind of how it is. We've had some epic games in their building, last possession games. I think they had a kid, Thomas Gardner, get 41 gain against us where we had that game under control, and there's been other times where we've had it under control and they've won. And then they've had it under control here, like the last game, and we've won. But, David Paget throwing in a fadeaway with one second left on the clock, or whatever on the shot clock, that won a game, in the last game, in the Hearnes Center. There's been so many good moments for both teams, but without question, the most favorable one for me would be the last game here. And I would say that the most favorite for them would probably be the last home game they played in their building also.

Speaker 4:
Is the key rebounding in this one?

Bill Self:
Yeah, they're a really good rebounding team. I think they're plus eight, something like that. And that hasn't been a strength of ours, per se. So I think that'll be a big key in rebounding the ball, because they're going to guard us on the half court. And if you guard on half court, you limit opponents to a relatively low percentage. We got to be able to steal some possessions that way. And I'm sure they're saying the same thing as well.

Speaker 2:
Given everything surrounding this one, do you anticipate it being a game that you're not going to have to worry about effort?

Bill Self:
Oh yeah, yeah. I don't think we'll have to worry about it. Now, you should never have to worry about effort, but this one will be a game that you probably want to tone it down a little bit. And there's a magic level that teams and athletes try to get to and it's where their energy and their focus and concentration, all that stuff, is at a crossroads. You know, if you have one way too high without the other, that that doesn't lead to your best performances. And so, yeah, we've got to be at that crossroads.

Speaker 2:
Coach, I said you've been amped all week, is that fair?

Bill Self:
These guys come up with some stuff. I haven't seen Ochai since we played UTEP. So because yesterday was our off day, but good for O. saying that, I guess I was amped Tuesday. So But, I have said all along that Tuesday's game, what it did was set up a terrific setting and atmosphere for Saturday's game. If we hadn't have been very good on Tuesday and not been successful, that would've diminished this game, at least some. So, I did tell him that. So, amped.

Speaker 2:
I noticed that [inaudible 00:06:54] and [Jamari 00:06:54] were there the other night, do you have other guys coming to talk to these guys or anything?

Bill Self:
No, no, nothing planned. I mean, if they come to practice or whatever, I mean, I'll let them say something. But I think we got quite a few exes coming in this weekend though. So they'll want be a part of it, those that can make it. And the last time that we played Mizzou for the most part doesn't include anybody that's still playing professionally. So, it'll be a little bit ... like [Obrai 00:07:27] or Wiggs, or Joe, or those. Frank, [Devonte 00:07:31], or who ... This series did not affect, but it did affect those guys, the T-Robs, and those guys, and the [Withys 00:07:44], and [Tyshawns 00:07:44]. So I'm sure that we'll have several back here. The number, I don't know what the number will be, but I'll be surprised if it's less than 20.

Speaker 5:
You know what that means, [inaudible 00:07:54] coach, do you think the guys on your roster right now understand how intense the rivalry once was?

Bill Self:
I don't know that they totally understand. We'll probably show them some videos and stuff like that to get them amped up about things. But we do have one thing that we have going that, you know, Christian Brown, obviously, his mother played at Missouri and he's heard her stories all growing up. And his uncle was a great player at Missouri as well. Mike and his brother went to Missouri, Parker. So yeah, I'm sure there's going to be some of those talks going on just because Christian probably is more familiar with it than anybody else on our team.

Speaker 4:
How is David?

Bill Self:
I haven't seen him. So, I was just told that David is ... swelling's down and seems to be okay and going to practice today. So that's good news.

Speaker 4:
You had a guy that's played for you that gets more amped for Missouri than others, you had a staff member that gets a little more excited, I'm guessing Danny, probably [inaudible 00:09:01]?

Bill Self:
Yeah, Danny. Would have meant a lot to Danny, without question. The antlers, back in the day, were pretty creative and pretty ruthless in some ways and got after Danny and his family quite a bit. So I would say Danny, probably as much as anybody. I think anybody local, whether it be Travis, I think, growing up with Denman, and Dixon, and all that stuff. I think that would lead to it. But the rivalry is ... It's hatred, to a level, amongst fans. It's not with the players and coaches. But it probably does bring some extra juice to some players in their camp, and certainly some players in our camp, more than others.

Speaker 4:
[inaudible 00:09:53] were famous for getting phone numbers and some of our players-

Bill Self:
And coaches.

Speaker 4:
How about yourself?

Bill Self:
And parents. Yeah, they were pretty good at that back in the day.

Speaker 6:
What do you want out of your offense?

Bill Self:
Well, we didn't run good offense against UTEP at all. So we scored off our defense the first half, we didn't score off our offense at a very efficient rate. So I just like to see ball and body movement be better. Even though I don't think it's awful, I don't think it's as good as it can be. And we need to ... You know, we're not going to get a shot in the first five, seven seconds of the shot clock and half court offense against these guys. So we got to be patient enough to get the ball moving. So it gives them, our offense, a chance to work and maybe give them a chance to break down, just like they'll say the same thing against us too. I don't know how fast the game will be. I anticipate being a fast game, but I can anticipate when we're playing five-on-five, there being some long possessions because I think both teams would guard pretty well.

Speaker 6:
Are you pretty close with Coach Martin?

Bill Self:
No, I wouldn't say close, but I was a fan of Cuonzo back when he played at Purdue, and I scouted games when I was assistant at Oklahoma State, when he was actually playing there with Glenn Robinson. And I've been a fan from afar, how he conducts his business and goes about it. I mean, he's a class, and at least from the perspective that I have. And so, I don't believe I've ever coached against Cuonzo except in that exhibition game. So I'm looking forward to that as well.

Speaker 2:
You mentioned good for the sport and good for basketball and rivalry and all that given last year and just how things have gone lately. How good is that going to be this environment on Saturday? Just having that back again?

Bill Self:
And, well, it's been ... I mean, it's kind of a weird way to look at it because, obviously, a season ends and then it doesn't start immediately when it ends. But it's been, what? 20 months since we've had a real crowd. So I mean, and I don't want to take away anything from this year, but I'm talking about a real crowd, and this will be the first one in those 20 months. And, so I think that'll be exciting and good for everybody. I know the people around here, you throw out records, all that stuff, Kansas is playing Missouri. And I think that, in itself, brings some excitement and energy to whatever situation there is. And so, it'll be good for everybody.

Speaker 5:
So it's obviously there are ton students camping out. We got to interview a couple of them before and [inaudible 00:12:52] amped for the game, do you have a message to Jayhawk nation?

Bill Self:
No, I've never been one on doing that stuff. I mean, we want to win this game, but I mean, this game is not more important than other games we play later on in our season. It's just more important because it's the next game and it's the present game. But yeah, the only thing I'd probably say to everybody is, "Hey, let's everybody bring their A game," because we know Mizzou will also.

Speaker 4:
You mentioned about 20 ex-players were going to be here. Have any of them told you that they're going to be here?

Bill Self:
Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're on our ticket list. Yeah.

Speaker 4:
Which ones?

Bill Self:
I'm not going to give you ... I don't have it in my head, but they'll be sitting somewhere behind the bench, I'm sure. You'll see them.

Speaker 7:
All right. Thanks, Coach.
