First favorite non-KU college player

While we wait for our game against Villanova this evening, I was curious who was your first favorite non-KU basketball player? We had the thread about first favorite KU player but was curious who did everyone enjoy watching from the outside?

For example my first favorite KU player was Danny Manning.

I would have to say my first non-favorite KU college player was probably Steve Alford at Indiana. I guess it’s just one of those situations I absolutely loved his overall basketball IQ and fundamentals. He was such a treat to watch shooting the basketball but also running around coming off or setting up screens. Kind of fitting with us playing Villanova today since Jay Wright loves having his players play similar to how Alford did.

UNC

I feel like we can turn them over a lot. They can get hot quickly but they are also very loose with the ball and turnover prone.

They can be sneaky good on the glass. I think we are tougher than them.

I’ve said it since the big 12 tourney started: Defend, rebound and score at the rim. Doesn’t matter how we shoot. We will win.

I think we can do all that against UNC

Big XII Coaches

Go Big 12

Several Big 12 head coaches were sitting in the front row, opposite the team benches for Saturday’s Final Four.

TCU’s Jamie Dixon, Texas’ Chris Beard, Baylor’s Scott Drew, and West Virginia’s Bob Huggins were all together watching the Jayhawks move the conference into the national title game for the second year in a row.

It also marked the third consecutive NCAA Tournament that a Big 12 program reached the title game, with Texas Tech going in 2019, no tournament in 2020 and Baylor winning it all in 2021.

Huggins, who recently received word that he had been elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, also was sitting just a few seats down from former Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger.

Not authoritarian at all

The FL GOP has passed bills aimed at criminalizing actions common to their political opponents, and created a 'police force' that answers to the Governor/Sec. of State specifically for enforcing laws. Yeah...that's pretty much step 2 in any authoritarian handbook (step 1: discredit and dismantle the free press).

Also seems like a great use of government resources.

A Proud Fan in NOLA

What a ride this has been---and continues to be---for Coach Self, the team and all Jayhawk fans. I have never been to the Final Four and at my age---68---I decided this was the year. I brought my son and yesterday's experience was a memory that I will always treasure. No matter what happens on Monday night---and we will be rooting hard---this has been one of the best experiences of my life.

I would describe yesterday's game as somewhat workmanlike. KU hit Villanova with a haymaker at the beginning of the game, courtesy of Ochai being Ochai and Big Dave 'dominating inside. Juan's defense on Gillespie was also spectacular, and the Hawks made it hard on Villanova to score, especially early. Braun struggled most of the game offensively, but obviously he got it going late. So proud of Ochai as he showed everyone what he is capable of doing. This was the first game in over a month that someone played him pretty straight, at least in the first half, and he made them pay.
Jalen's work on the boards was spectacular, and it was pretty physical inside. Villanova kept us from getting transition baskets, but our half court offense was good for most of the game. It was a well-officiated game, with a miNiccum of ticky-tack fouls.

We sat on the border between the Duke section and the UNC section. Man, those people don't like each other. At all.

We will have our hands full with UNC---as should be expected in the Finals. Their big man is a beast on the boards (21 rebounds) and their two guards are quick, can get their own shot and they shoot the eyes out of it. Juan will play one of them, but it will be interesting to see how we match up with the other. If we can stay in front of them, our length should bother them. When Remy is in the game, he will need some help on one of them. Big Dave will be going against a shot blocker, and he will need to have another solid game. We've seen Manek before, but he is improved. His release is one of the quickest I've seen. I assume that's Jalen's match-up and that should be quite a battle. Ochai remains a big key, and although UNC has some athletes, I don't know how they match up with him.

As objective as I can be, I see the Hawks winning. UNC plays hard and their guards are great, but we have a more balanced team offensively and we are as good or better defensively. I assume both teams will want to run, so it should be exciting.

I have derived so much pleasure watching the Jayhawks over the years, and this is as good as it gets. Let's finish it off in style on Monday! Rock Chalk!

Duke/UNC

Lot of ugly shots so far. Getting some open looks on both ends. Both teams feeling it.

I flip flop on who I think we match up better with. I do like that neither have a 5 who can shoot unless you take out Bacot and slide Manek down.

UNC has its iron 5 similar to Nova

Jalen is going to have to come to play against Banchero or Manek.

Juan may be the most important player. If he is locked in defense, he can really cause problems. Neither team are good on defense. Our offense should free flow which will be a change from Miami, Providence, Creighton and Nova.

Ochai

But on this stage, with a spot in Monday’s national championship game on the line, Agbaji decided to let it all hang out.

All of it came one day after Kentucky big man Oscar Tshiebwe, in this very building, was given the player of the year award after his monster season for the Wildcats.

Asked if he felt slighted by Tshiebwe winning player of the year honors, Agbaji shrugged.

“Not slighted,” he said. “Obviously Oscar’s a great player. But, you know, I’d rather have a national championship over that accolade all the time.
