Off Topic Congratulations to the Royals/A’s Moving On

Tremendous turn around to make the playoffs this season. I will be rooting for you.

Sad day for me. The A’s played their last game under the Oakland franchise. I followed them from Kansas City to Oakland in 1968 when they relocated. I was a wee youngster then and yes I am old.

One of my favorite memories of being with my dad was when I woke him to listen on the radio to the last three innings of Catfish Hunter’s perfect game for the A’s against the Twins in 1968. He was pissed at first when I woke him but it all ended well.☺️

News and Notes Updates from Brian Borland - Arizona State week

Was proud of Berryhill and how he played especially with situation coming back from wedding late.

The guys are still responding well to what they are saying.

JB Brown they can count on as a blitzer and they brought him a lot last week. Good at slipping blocks.

ASU is concerning and wants to control the clock. They will take shots to keep you honest. The RB is hard to tackle. They are smart enough to get him the ball.

QB is really good with his feet. If something is not there he will run. Have to limit them in the run game. Need to turn them into a passing team.

Have worked on being consistent and aware of situations. When they can do that they "are a solid crew"

They are close to putting it all together. There is nobody jumping off the ship.

The issues haven't been scheme. They need to play with effort all the time.

TCU had explosive plays and some of that was on KU's defense.

DJ Warner getting more snaps and developing well. Starting to hone in on details. When he rares back and goes he's a handful.

News and Notes Updates from Lance Leipold Hawk Talk - ASU week

Lance talking some baseball. He's a Brewers fan saying there is a good crowd at Johnny's. Also cheering on the Royals.

Hishaw is in the crowd and grew up playing baseball and Leipold said he is playing well.

Wudke and Foster also on hand. Said Wudke has been steady on the defensive line and Foster being a two sport athlete has fit in well with the locker room.

Looking back over the film against TCU some key things like the punt return for a touchdown and the interception by Burroughs where they would have needed a touchdown. He did not like the way they tackled not good angles and pursuit.

Gave too many windows for the quarterback from TCU to throw. They left some throws out there and had some big drops. Said they have had a good week of practice.

Talked about Berryhill having to fly out at 5:00 a.m. Made it back to Kansas City by 9:00 played extremely hard and was confident replacing Wheeler.

Wheeler won the strong link award even though he didn't play. Leipold said this is how he contributed and helped the team. Said he has been a big part of the preparation and helping out although he hasn't been able to play.

With Neal and Hishaw thinks they are the best one to punch running back in the league. Hishaw is finally healthy in playing well.

He believes the passing game is close to getting better than it has been. When they look at the losses one thing the team has owned is there are improvements in several areas needed it's just not one thing. In the passing game they had some that were dropped, some that were underthron, but the passing game is getting closer

He said he looked at the statistics compared to last year and they are not far off the one that stands out is turnover margin

Looking at Arizona State they are plus seven in the turnover margin from where they were last year. That is going to be a big key on Saturday is who can take care of the ball.

Last Saturday was their worst tackling performance and they have worked hard this week to correct that.

Stats on JD attempts vs completions

This has been a slow kindle over the last couple of weeks, but can someone post or point me to KU '24 QB stats regarding attempts vs completions on the L/R/Middle of the field?

** Bonus points if the stats include depth of completion.

They show the same stats for NFL QBs, so I am confident they are somewhere. I would just like to see what our success rates have been and ease a complaint of mine that we are not using the middle of the field *at all*. I really hope I am wrong.

The life of a KU Football Fan

Saturday: I cannot believe we just blew another game...

Sunday: There's no way we're this bad. This has to be all Jeff Grimes fault. We should burn him alive in front of his family.

Monday: I can't believe JK led us to believe we'd win 10 games. He of all people should have known we are cursed. We should get our money back!

Tuesday: I don't even want to watch another game. What's the point? We're not going to do anything this year. They don't deserve my attention.

Wednesday: At least most of our wins were the non-con. It's better to lose those than the conference games. KSU and OSU have already lost a conference game too.

Thursday: Our schedule really isn't very hard. If we just stop beating ourselves we could potentially go on a little run and at least make a bowl.

Friday: We are a good football team. There's no way we blow another game. We have senior leadership that isn't going to let us go out like this. 7-2 could be good enough for Dallas. Fvck TCU!

Saturday: Honey, please don't take the kids. I swear I can change. I WILL change.

FB Stats & Info Inside the numbers from the TCU game

Here are some numbers and stats after diving more into it from the TCU game:

Pass blocking grades:

Bryce Cabeldue- 90.1
Bryce Foster- 85.3
Logan Brown- 80.4
Michael Ford- 79.8
Shane Bumgardner- 72.6
Kobe Baynes- 55.7

Not many excuses for the passing game. The OL got the job done and gave for Daniels and the wide receivers. Those are solid pass block scores.

Run blocking grades:

Bryce Cabeldue- 91.6
Jared Casey- 86.6
Logan Brown- 76.3
Shane Bumgardner- 74.6
Quentin Skinner- 68.0
Luke Grimm- 62.4
Bryce Foster- 61.6
Michael Ford- 58.0
Kobe Baynes- 56.1

I know the depth chart still listed Baynes as the starter but you have to wonder if that will change for the ASU game. Plus Baynes had two penalties last week.

Tackling grades:

Jalen Dye- 85.2
Cobee Bryant- 85.1
Damarius McGhee- 78.8
Dean Miller- 78.7
Caleb Taylor- 73.8
D.J. Withers- 71.9
Blake Herold- 70.2
Tommy Dunn- 69.7
Mello Dotson- 63.9
Taiwan Berryhill- 53.1
Marvin Grant- 47.8
JB Brown- 47.6
O.J. Burroughs- 44.7
Dylan Wudke- 18.3

Jalen Dye had eight attempts to make a tackle and didn't miss one. Cobee had nine attempts and was also perfect. Burroughs didn't score well missing four tackles.

Coverage grades:

Marvin Grant- 78.2
Cobee Bryant- 74.3
JB Brown- 71.2
Damarius McGhee- 62.2
O.J. Burroughs- 50.5
Mello Dotson- 50.0
Taiwan Berryhill- 38.7
Jalen Dye- 36.7

Dye's tackling and cover grades are polar opposite. You won't win many games (unless it is a shootout) when three of your secondary players are 50 and below.

Football Thoughts Going back and watching Arizona State

No doubt in my mind they don't have better personnel than West Virginia or TCU.

Watching games against Texas State and Texas Tech.

There has been a lot of talk about their RB Skattebo, but I don't think he's better than Neal or Hishaw. He went off against Mississippi State and has been held in check since. Both Texas State and Texas Tech limited him. Now we are finding out that Mississippi State isn't that good. Their defense ranks 115th in the nation. Skattebo is a tough, physical runner. Now, where he can hurt you is in the passing game. He's the second leading receiver on the team and they try to include him in a lot of things.

The QB is okay. He's a transfer from Michigan State and I don't think he throws it all that great. I do like his ability to scramble but they don't do designed runs with him. As I'm watching them right now I don't see a lot on the offensive line. I'm in the third quarter of the Texas State game, paused it, and went to look up their OL on PFF:

Here is the OL: (with 70 or more snaps)
Ben Coleman guard- 69.6
Max Iheanacor- T- 69.3
Joshua Atkins- T- 65.5
Emmit Bohle- T- 63.9
Leif Fautanu- C- 61.9
Cade Briggs- G- 61.1
Kyle Scott-G- 56.1

Their leading receiver is Jordyn Tyson from Colorado who KU offered. He is only avg 52 yards a game and the next WR closest to him avg 30 yards receiving a game.

Defensively they play a 4-3 and again, like the OL, I think they are just so-so. I think ASU can be run on. I think their best LB is Keyshaun Elliott who is from Richmond, Mo.

One thing they do is show a lot of different blitz packages and against Texas State they backed out a lot of them.

Remember, this team was picked last in the preseason polls. Their coaching staff has done a good job and they beat a nice team in Texas State on the road. Texas State presents some challenges on offense but they just lost to Sam Houston State last weekend.

There are a few things that worry me:

1- Being on the road
2- The weather
3- Can KU find a way to bounce back and be ready to play

I just watched about 200 snaps. This game is very winnable. Arizona State is coming off a bye but other than that I don't see any real advantage they have in personnel.

News and Notes Updates from Jeff Grimes - Arizona State week

Said when he's taken over other offenses the situation is different.

BYU needed a fresh start. At Baylor they wanted something different.

At KU it is the opposite. He kept things the same where he learned and blended in with what KU was doing.

They have settled into what they do and won't be a lot of changes just small tweaks.

Whether it was Jalon or other players they just needed to make a few more plays.

The defense determines where the ball will go from the QB and then the QB makes the call where to throw it.

Hishaw you can appreciate it live because he's so physical. Sometimes you don't see how good he plays in practice because they blow the whistle.

Rotating Clements helped keep OL fresh.

Arizona State is very aggressive. They've done nice job with TO. Very physical.

Said they are seeing a lot of cover three and people sitting in the middle of the field. The defense dictates where the ball goes.
