Big statement from Coach Self on the signing of Darryn Peterson

“This is one of the best recruiting moments that Kansas basketball has had in decades,” Self said. “Darryn is an all-around guard that scores at all levels and is also a terrific facilitator and defender. He has been well drilled and has a toughness about him being raised in a family where his brother is a successful football player at Wisconsin.

“Darryn was as important as any recruit we have recruited in recent memory. Coach (Kurtis) Townsend did a great job as the lead recruiter. Darryn can be a catalyst to also draw other players to our program.”

Larry Porter IV - Raytown

Now this is an interesting offer. I would assume this is not a PWO. From what JK said we would only be taking 4 WR’s in the freshman class. With Nickens commitment tomorrow, that is 4. Something to watch. Big kid, with some speed. Film reminded me of Skinner a bit.

Kansas Signs Samis Calderon

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Forward Samis Calderon has signed a financial aid agreement to play basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced today. Calderon will be a freshman at KU for the 2025-26 season.

A 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Calderon is from Espirito Santo, Brazil, and is a graduate of the NBA Academy Latin America located in Mexico City. Calderon is currently playing in his second season for Overtime Elite (OTE) in Atlanta.

“Samis is a guy we have been very excited about the last several months,” Self said. “He has great size at 6-foot-8 and he can play multiple positions on the perimeter. Samis has a really nice shooting touch that can stretch the defense.

“Samis has been trained well at OTE that should make the transition into major college basketball somewhat seamless,” Self continued. “Coach (Kurtis) Townsend has done a terrific job on recruiting Samis. We feel his best ball is ahead of him.”

Calderon has international experience while representing his home country of Brazil. He played for Brazil the 2023 FIBA U19 World Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, where he averaged 9.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game during the event. Calderon also has competed for Brazil in the 2022 Under 18 Americas Championship and 2022 Under 18 South America Championship.

News and Notes Updates from Lance Leipold Hawk Talk - BYU week

Leipold said it was a good Saturday against Iowa State and said the team hung with it and was waiting for a game like that. Everybody came together and produced.

Said they have attacked the week in a great way getting ready for BYU.

Leipold said Neal breaking the record was very special. Great to see him get it earlier in the game and do it in front of the home fans. It was a record that stood for a long time and it was a big accomplishment.

They talked to him about coming back his senior year and breaking records and what that means for his legacy.

They fell behind but answered with three straight scoring drives and stayed in it. The throw from Daniels to Grimm was a big time play and that set the tone.

Grimm is now second in career touchdown receptions behind Dezmon Briscoe. Leipold says he's playing with a lot of confidence in the game has slowed down for him.

Daniels put together another good performance and we are starting to see the Jalon Daniels that was expected and people know.

He liked the performance of the offensive line. Jeff Grimes got into a good rhythm and understood what Iowa State was trying to do.

Said Mello Dotson made the big play right when it looked like things were starting to get tight. It was a great play at a great time Leipold said.

After a win like that you feel a lot better physically and mentally. When he walked into the team meeting on Monday things were louder and you could tell the disposition of the team was better.

Army Football Time Chewing Drive.

21 plays. 94 yards. 13:54 of clock.

Only one pass (7 yards) and two plays longer than 8 yards (17 yard run, 10 yard run). It was literally up the middle, up the middle, to the boundary…lather, rinse, repeat. It’s worth 3 minutes of your time to watch this drive. UNT knew exactly what they were going to do and they just couldn’t stop it.

Recruiting Update Is Samis Calderon closing in on a decision?

Hey all,

After talking to someone close to Samis Calderon, it sounds like the 6-foot-8, 200-pound small forward from Overtime Elite in Atlanta, Ga., is closing in on a decision.

From what I’ve gathered, it sounds like Calderon is focused on Kansas, Auburn, Michigan, and Tennessee.

A final decision could be made early this week, and if that’s the case, I love where Kansas stands.

Defense and Observations against MSU

I think the guards played better defense. Mayo did a good job on their guards and Griffen had another impressive block. Storr is putting forth the effort but he's got to learn how to not ruin his effort with his hands. Overall thought the defense took a step forward but still plenty of room for improvement.

Offensively, eventhough this was the HD show, I still saw a lot to like about what's coming. I like how Self tinkered more with lineups in this game. Part of that was due to foul trouble, but we did see some small ball and we also saw Flory playing next to HD which was viable for this game. I also like the fact that we had 6 players outside of HD score between 6-11 points. I'd like to see us a little more balanced but the fact that we got contributions at times from several different players is a positive.

Mayo is just about there, and eventhough he didn't score a lot in this game he made a huge basket and free throws in the closing minutes to add to his 7 assists and 10 rebounds!! He's awesome, and can impact winning in a lot of ways including on the defensive end and on the boards.

Griffen hit a couple badly needed and timely threes and I think he will be the next one to round into form. He showed flashes defensively at times.

Storr has given us micro glimpses of how good he can be. He's trying really hard on defense but has a little ways to go. He has made an adequate amount of his 3 point attemps so far and he's a heck of a talent, who will raise our ceiling tremendously once it clicks for him.

Coit is going to struggle at times against these bigger and better athletes but he made a timely three for us and continues to show that he can make some plays on both ends occasionally so hopefully he can rise to the occasion

Moore will be an interesting add to this rotation once healthy. An athletic guard who can apply ball pressure would fit in nicely with this group.

After 3 games the vision for this team is becoming clearer. We've played 2 good teams who are completely different in their styles and found a way to win. I've seen enough to think that this team definitely has the pieces, just need to hope they peak in March..

KJ - tale of two halves

First half he had 14 points and one rebound. In the second half he had 0 points and 1 rebound. Why did he play 37 minutes? Bill will need to find some rotations where Storr is playing the four or something. Try going small with four shooters around Hunter.

I do love that Bill will have options but hope he isn’t too enamored with always playing KJ. He has a role but it is not as the player who plays the most minutes by eight whole minutes.

Remember when we put in Nick Channel and he was good?

Walk-on linebacker.

Wasn't perfect but actually played hard and had some huge tackles.

You won't convince me that we don't have a walk-on who can be more effective than Taiwan Berryhill, who has proven time and again that he will not make plays.

What candidates are on our current roster?

Dylan Downing?

Ezra Vedral?

Hell, little Cole Mondi will at least try hard.

Put anyone else in the game. I don't think they can do worse.

Recruiting Update The Early Signing Period Begins Today

Hey all,

I've reached out to the father of Darryn Peterson to see if he plans to sign today or later on in the week. As soon as I get an answer, I'll let all of you know.

Also, I've been told that Samis Calderon plans to announce today and I love where Kansas stands. If I had to guess, I'd say that KU's class, by the end of the day, features Peterson and Calderon.

Lastly, I really don't know what's going on with Bryson Tiller. He was supposed to announce over the weekend but pushed that commitment back. I've been told that a decision will be made during the early signing period. Last week, I heard quite a bit of Georgia Tech talk, but I'm still making calls.

Quick Thoughts Talked to BYU play by play man

Greg Wrubell will be on the podcast.

He's really good. Couple things of note:

I knew that BYU was creating a lot of turnovers but he told me that they have two interceptions in every Big 12 game this year.

He also said it snowed in Provo today so you never know what the weather's going to bring Saturday night.
