I rewatched the game this morning and I couldn’t help, but notice a few things.
1. How about the work this staff has done in a short period of time to develop this offensive line? Fuchs has done a tremendous job with a disaster he was left to work with. The line didn’t always get the best push last night, but coming from a team that was getting shoved around by South Dakota in week 1 to getting the best of 4-5* kids in the trenches, is absolutely amazing.
2. Two very important calls that were vital (and to be quite honest, we got very lucky) I feel are being overlooked.
A. The unsportsmanlike in OT was rather mild and I’m not sure I would’ve thrown a flag. I don’t know what the exact ruling is on celebrations, but I felt like in moment you easily could’ve let that one slide. 10 yards closer in OT is HUGE.
B. There very easily could’ve been a holding call on the two point conversion. If Cabeldue had held on a split second more, I’m not sure there’s a way a flag isn’t thrown and we get forced into a 2nd OT after the PAT.
3. The defense is bad, but the TO margin was nice to see for a change. The DB’s had a few good jumps and reads on balls. Very easily could’ve had two more Ints. It was also nice to see consistent pass pressure off the edge.
4. Resiliency Is something we haven’t seen in quite awhile. Even guys on the game thread were tossing in the hat late in the 4th. This team kept coming back for more, even after two 14 point efforts from UT. They were calm and collected. You could see in JD’s eyes he was as cool as a cucumber. Love the effort, passion and fight this staff entrenched in these players. In the past, we would’ve curled up in the fetal position. (I.E. - the drop by Lassiter early in the game on 2nd & long felt like a moment the wheels would generally start to fall off. They struck the very next play on 3rd & long for a 1st)
Happy for this team and staff. Well deserved. Hell, I may watch the game a third time.
