WR in the portal

That I have my eye on just in case we lose a player or two at WR to the portal. Ian Stewart of Michigan State. He will have four years to play.

Stewart is transferring out of Michigan State but KU offered him out of high school. He’s being followed by quite a bit of our staff, but I think a lot of that had to do with him out of high school. Aligo is well aware of him. Samuels was the WR coach at MSU when he was initially committed to MSU. Simpson follows him as well.

Out of high school this is what the scouting report was on him.

“Has great size. Tall, well-built, and looks like a college player in high school. Versatile and has played multiple positions. Natural pass-catcher who attacks the football and catches it away from his body. Size and strength allow him to outmuscle defenders for position and then the football. Smooth runner after the catch. Strong, physical and willing to block. Great intangibles as far as work ethic and willingness to compete and play multiple roles. Has moved around so much position-wise that he still must polish his wide receiver skills in college. Still learning as a route-runner. Has to become more sudden in and out of his breaks. Given his size and intangibles, he projects as an impact player on the Power 5 level.”

Just got email from playoff committee

Some interesting changes and new rules

IRVING, Texas – The College Football Playoff (CFP) Management Committee today announced a series of new actions it will take to protect student-athlete health and safety as the omicron virus has spread in advance of the College Football Playoff.

“As we prepare for the Playoff, it’s wise and necessary to put into place additional precautions to protect those who will play and coach the games,” said Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the CFP. “These policies will better protect our students and staffs while providing clarity in the event worst-case scenarios result.”

The changes were based on a recommendation from the Management Committee during a video conference yesterday, December 21, 2021.

The following are the policies for the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl if an institution determines that it is unable to compete in the game because an insufficient number of athletes are available to play because of COVID-19.

1. Fiesta and Peach Bowls – The CFP, bowl game and ESPN shall attempt to identify an alternate date for the game within one week of the scheduled date; if no date can be identified, the game would be considered no contest.

2. Playoff Semifinals (Cotton and Orange Bowls) if one team is unavailable to play – The unavailable team shall forfeit the game and its opponent would advance to the national championship game.

3. Playoff Semifinals (Cotton and Orange Bowls) if both teams are unavailable to play in one semifinal – The semifinal game would be declared “no contest” and the team winning the other semifinal game would be declared the CFP National Champion.

4. Playoff Semifinals (Cotton and Orange Bowls) if three teams are unavailable to play – The semifinal game in which two teams are unable to play would be declared “no contest.” In the other semifinal game, the team unable to play shall forfeit the game and its opponent would be declared CFP National Champion.

5. CFP National Championship – If the team’s unavailability is determined after the Playoff Semifinals have been conducted, the national championship game in Indianapolis may be rescheduled to no later than Friday, January 14. If one team is able to play and the other is not and the game cannot be rescheduled or is rescheduled and cannot be played, then the team unable to play shall forfeit the game and the other team shall be declared CFP National Champion. If both teams are unable to play on either an original or rescheduled date, then the game shall be declared “no contest” and the CFP National Championship shall be vacated for this season.

Self is against Covid-related forfeits

Speaking with reporters at the KU team hotel in Boulder shortly after Tuesday’s scheduled game at Colorado was canceled because of multiple positive COVID-19 tests in the CU program, Self said he did not see any way the conference could move forward with its existing policy of forcing a team that suffers from a COVID outbreak to forfeit a game.

“That will change,” Self said Tuesday night. “I’m not going to say positively what the policies will be, but there’s no way, in my opinion, that you can have that policy in conference play with the thought that this can happen to anybody anytime like this.”

By Wednesday morning, a report from SI.com's Ross Dellenger indicated that the Big 12 was on the brink of "restoring policies that deem COVID-19-impacted games "no contests" instead of forfeits.

OL in the Portal Claims KU Offer

Michael Shanahan, Tennessee-Martin OL, who was All-Ohio Valley Conference first team this year. He is listed on their roster as a sophomore at 6'5" and 310 pounds. Both Ianello and Fuchs follow on social.

I have no idea why I can't get images to come up like I normally do, but have deleted, etc.

Hunter Nourzad (OL) tweeting out a KU offer. Followed by the recruiting staff and Coach Fuchs. First team all conference. Didn’t find a Rivals card for him. Has offers from the likes of Temple and Tulane.

Thought I would post and let @JK or someone else blow it out of the water. Sorry for creating work for you Jon, realize it’s a pretty slow time…

Self said

According to a statement released by Kansas Athletics, there is no plan to reschedule the game. But Self did not rule out the possibility of KU adding another game to its schedule somewhere down the road to make up for the lost opportunity on Tuesday night.

“Tad said, ‘Bill, if we have seven and they say we can play, we want to play,’” Self said Tuesday evening. “But this is not an important game in the big scheme of things. I actually agree totally with the decision that was made. It was their doctors, our doctors, everybody.”

Initially, it was just one positive test within the CU program. But after the rest of the CU team was tested, more positive test results surfaced, prompting the cancellation.

Self said the Jayhawks would continue to take every precaution possible in the meantime, and he touted the positive impact of vaccines in helping keep the COVID-19 virus under control.

“Even though the illness is serious, I think statistics show that those that have been vaccinated carry far less risks than those who have not,” Self said. “We’re going to try to be as precautionary as we can and probably put in some protocols that look similar to last year, but I hope it doesn’t feel similar to last year.

“The (omicron) variant is going to spread like wildfire. We’re all going to get it. The good news is if you are vaccinated and boosted, the symptoms of getting it are very mild compared to those who aren’t. At least our team is vaccinated and for the most part boosted. I don’t know what to do. One positive shouldn’t shut you down. But in this situation, multiple positives and there’s symptoms … more importantly (players) are going home (for the holidays) and there are some individuals who may be a little bit compromised from an immune system standpoint; this was not that important to play this game.”

Self also said KU recently decided to cancel its annual holiday clinic, scheduled for next Monday, “for this exact reason.”
