News and Notes Jayhawks to Host Wolf Pack Wednesday in 2021 Finale

In a replacement contest, No. 6/6 Kansas (9-1) will close out the 2021 calendar year playing host to Nevada (6-4) on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m. CT.

The replacement game versus Nevada came to light after KU’s original opponent, Harvard, did not make the trip to Lawrence because of a combination of injuries and positive COVID-19 tests within the Harvard program. Additionally, KU’s scheduled Big 12 opener against TCU on Saturday, Jan. 1 has been postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the TCU program.

Kansas has won five consecutive games after its 80-72 win against Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 18. After opening the season 1-4, Nevada has won five straight games after its 68-63 win against Loyola Marymount on Dec. 18.

Through 10 games, Kansas leads the Big 12 in scoring at 85.8 points per game, which is sixth nationally and has a +18.3 scoring margin, which is 14th in the NCAA. The Jayhawks also lead the Big 12, and are third nationally, in field goal percentage shooting 51.9 percent and three-point field goal percentage at 37.6 percent. KU pulls down 35.6 rebounds per game with a +6.5 rebound margin. KU averages 17.3 assists, 4.5 blocked shots, and 7.7 steals per game.

Senior guard Ochai Agbaji leads the Big 12 and is third nationally in scoring at 22.0 points per game. He also leads the Big 12 in three-point field goals made per game (3.1), three-point field goal percentage (48.4%), and has made 16 threes in his last four games.

Junior guard Christian Braun has scored 85 points in his last four games which is a 21.3 average. He is next in scoring at 16.8 points per game, which is fourth in the Big 12. Braun leads Kansas with a 6.7 rebound average, which is fifth in the conference.

Super-senior guard Remy Martin is scoring 10.9 ppg, he pulls down 4.1 rebounds per contest and is second on the team with 33 assists. Senior David McCormack averages 8.5 points per game and he pulls down 5.4 rebounds per outing. He is 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the field in his last five games and leads Kansas with 15 blocked shots. Redshirt-sophomore Dajuan Harris Jr. (3.7 ppg) rounds out the starters. He leads KU with 39 assists and has 12 steals. Harris is second in the Big 12, 24th nationally, in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.0.

Other KU regulars include super-senior forward Mitch Lightfoot (5.5 ppg, 3.3 RPG), redshirt-sophomore Jalen Wilson (5.4 ppg, 5.1 RPG), super-senior guard Jalen Coleman-Lands (4.1 ppg), freshman forward Zach Clemence (3.8 ppg), sophomore guard Joseph Yesufu (2.4 ppg), freshman guard Bobby Pettiford (2.1 ppg, 11 assists), and freshman forward KJ Adams Jr. (5.4 minutes per game).

Up Next

With the Jan. 1 game against TCU being postponed, Kansas will open the 2021-22 Big 12 Conference season at Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2. Kansas leads the overall series with Oklahoma State, 119-60, and the Jayhawks have won six of the last seven matchups.

Quick Thoughts Players entering portal after bowl games

This week could be a busy one as a lot of players are expected to enter the portal after the bowl games.

I can confirm that KU hasn't offered anyone since Lonnie Phelps and he is the only one with a recent offer.

Like I said I expect this week to be fairly slow and I don't know exactly when the coaches will return to the office. The convention is Jan. 9 so they might have time off until then.

This week I will be keeping a close eye on the portal because I'm guessing there will be new names to follow.

SOMETHING TO WATCH:

During its current five-game winning streak, Nevada has hit six or more shots from behind the arc in the past five games. The Wolk Pack were 10-of-28 against George Mason, 8-of-26 against Washington, 9-of-27 against Pepperdine, 10-of-24 against UMD, and 6-of-20 against LMU.

Additionally, during this current five-game winning streak, Nevada has converted 95-of-120 free throws. The Wolf Pack hit 18-of-19 against George Mason, 25-of-33 against Washington, 10-of-15 against Pepperdine, 18-of-24 against UMD, and 24-of-29 against LMU.

Before its current five-game winning streak, Nevada had dropped four-straight games. In losing to San Diego, Santa Clara (Away), San Francisco (Away), and South Dakota State, the Wolf Pack shot 30-of-82 (37%) from behind the arc and 39-of-49 (80%) from the free-throw line.

Nevada hit 4-of-15 shots from behind the arc and 10-of-12 free-throws against San Diego, 13-of-28 and 7-of-8 against Santa Clara, 6-of-17 and 8-of-10 against San Francisco, and 7-of-22 and 14-of-19 against South Dakota State.

Of its four losses, two, Santa Clara (away), 96-74, and at home against South Dakota State, 102-75, were complete blowouts.

Jayhawks to Host Nevada Dec. 29 in Allen Fieldhouse

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball will host Nevada on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m. (CT) inside historic Allen Fieldhouse. The contest will be televised on Big 12 NOW on ESPN+. Tickets for the previously scheduled Dec. 29 game versus Harvard will be valid for admission to the Nevada contest and will not be re-issued.

The Kansas-Nevada game was scheduled after Harvard canceled the Dec. 29 contest because of a combination of injuries and positive COVID-19 tests within the Crimson program. Nevada had its Dec. 29 game against San Jose State postponed due to COVID-related concerns in the San Jose State program.

No. 7 Kansas (9-1) last played on Dec. 18 with an 80-72 home win against Stephen F. Austin. The Jayhawks have won five-consecutive games heading into the Nevada contest. KU had its Dec. 21 game at Colorado canceled due to COVID-19 issues in the CU program.

Nevada is 6-4 on the season and the Wolfpack have won five-straight contests after opening the 2021-22 season 1-4. Nevada defeated Loyola Marymount, 68-63, in its last outing on Dec. 18 in Reno, Nevada.

Question for JK RE; Traffic Volume On This Site Compared to A Year Ago

JK, I have a question regarding traffic volume, number of hits, visits ...... however you might refer to it (I'm old and not very technical) on this Memorial Stadium Slant Site at since the hiring of Coach Leipold this past Spring compared to a similar time period in 2020. I am guessing that Jayhawk Slant knows precisely how many hits they have experienced at any given time. That might be proprietary information that you don't want to divulge and if that's the case, perhaps you could just post it as a percentage increase. I would guess it would be reasonable to equate traffic volume on this site to increased interest in the activities of the football program. Is the AD and members of the Athletic Department aware of something like the increased volume on this site and the significance that may carry as a barometer relative to increased interest in the football program in general? Personally, I have been beaten down to the level of being a more casual fan of the football program in recent years but I know that during the coaching search and since the hiring of Coach Leipold I find myself visiting this site far more often than I have at perhaps any point since joining. I'm guessing there are many fans just like me. I feel he has been a terrific hire. He has already been responsible for bringing an energy to the program that has been missing for far too long and I have every confidence that he and his staff will continue to build this program back to a place of respectability in the coming years. Rock Chalk.

Some of y'all want some football chat so here you go. Thinking back to some of our discussions, I remembered this thread by JK.

There were 28 FBS HC changes; 13 P5 jobs, 11 G5 jobs, and 4 independents. TL;DR - you may skip over reading down the list but I highlighted the P5 teams I placed in the poll to see when they had their HC changes and when they hired the next HC.

  • Nov 21: Troy - Chip Lindsey fired; hired Jon Sumrall (Kentucky Co-DC) on Dec 2
  • Nov 23: New Mexico State - Doug Martin fired; hired Jerry Kill (TCU interim HC) on Nov 28
  • Nov 26: Louisiana Tech - Skip Holtz fired; hired Sonny Cumbie (Tech OC) on Nov 30

  • Nov 27: SMU: Sonny Dykes resigned; hired Rhett Lashlee (Miami OC) on Nov 29
  • Nov 28: Oklahoma - Lincoln Riley resigned; hired Brent Venables (Clemson DC) on Dec 5
  • Nov 28: Duke - David Cutcliffe resigned, hired Mike Elko (Texas A&M DC) on Dec 10
  • Nov 28: Louisiana - Billy Napier resigned; hired Michael Desormeaux (ULL Co-OC) on Dec 5
  • Nov 29: Notre Dame: Brian Kelly resigned; hired Marcus Freeman (ND DC) on Dec 3
  • Nov 29: Fresno State - Kalen DeBoer resigned; hired Jeff Tedford (former Cal HC) on Dec 7
  • Nov 29: Temple - Rod Carey fired; hired Stay Drayton (Texas RB coach) on Dec 15
  • Dec 2: Virginia - Bronco Mendenhall resigned; hired Tony Elliott (Clemson OC) on Dec 10
  • Dec 2: Colorado State - Steve Addazio fired; hired Jay Norvell (former Nevada HC) on Dec 6
  • Dec 6: Miami - Manny Diaz fired; hired Mario Cristobal (Oregon HC) on Dec 6
  • Dec 6: Oregon - Mario Cristobal resigned; hired Dan Lanning (Georgia DC) on Dec 11
  • Dec 6: Nevada - Jay Norvell resigned; hired Ken Wilson (Oregon Co-DC) on Dec 10
Many have stated that the timing for the KUFB HC search in April was most ideal to get Leipold. With that in mind, which of the job openings would have really considered Leipold? I specifically left off some of the P5 schools in the poll because I eventually had to do that but there were some that never felt like schools that would have considered Leipold.

Transfers 'Signing'

I'm sure it's been asked/answered several times, but when does a transfer commit to a school officially? I ask because I have seen several instances of a transfer referencing they have 'signed' yet I understand they are not committed to a school until school actually starts and they are actually attending class. Just trying to understand which is correct. Also, where can we see a list of currently 'committed' or 'signed' kids to are transferring in to KU as they do not appear on the commitment list.
