Been told Phelps will visit Virginia Tech over Syracuse. His dad said it was coming down to several schools out of the ACC, AAC, Big 12 and Mountain West.
His visit for KU has always been set for Thurs and doing it a day early will allow him to get back home and pack up and move to the school he chooses.
Right now it is a two-team race and I wouldn't put any odds on it at this time.
--------------------------------------
This current class is really down to three spots. When I say current, I mean the class that will be known in the early signing class the first week of February.
Right now there are three targets or positions I think everything comes down to.
Ky Thomas, RB, transfer from Minnesota. On Friday Thomas had another virtual meeting with the Kansas coaches this one primarily with Jonathan Wallace and Andy Kotelnicki. He has had two meetings with the staff last week. There is word several schools are interested in Thomas from Iowa, Purdue, and Oklahoma. I still haven't heard anything connecting Thomas and Kansas State since he went in the portal.
Lonnie Phelps, DE, transfer from Miami, Ohio. Phelps would be the perfect edge rusher the Jayhawks have been targeting since they started looking at transfers. I know schools have reached out to him with one of the most consistent being Florida State. But FSU recently picked up a commitment from Jared Verse who was the most sought-after DE in the country. The school I have heard showing a lot of interest is Syracuse.
One other note Phelps will start his visit on Thursday and can get into later on why that is significant.
The last spot will go to a defensive back and that could come from the portal or the high school ranks. One player I know the staff has been in contact with is
Ronald "Champ" Lewis a DB from Louisiana who is listed as a Texas commit, but since he didn't have an LOI to sign in December is looking around. The inside word is TCU is also making a strong push at him and others will as well since he started to look around.
There are 11 total spots left in the class, but right now only seven are available because of the 85-man limit. For every KU player who enters the portal that will give them one more spot to fill. As it stands right now, if they fill the three positions they are looking at, they will have four available spots to use. And then up to four more depending on someone leaving.
If they can land Thomas and Phelps and a DB that will basically wrap up the February news for signing day. The additional spots wouldn't be available for a player to use until a summer arrival.
