tha Jayhawks can't be stopped, we decimatin' our opponents

so f*ck you, f*ck your momma, and f*ck your ugly kids too

Use of personnel: Neal AND Hishaw

When healthy, Hishaw is a stud and complements Neal’s style. Seems to me it would make a lot more sense to have him and Neal on the field at the same time rather than the two and three TE sets we keep rolling out, especially when one of those TEs was recently playing at Fort Hays St. If memory serves, I’m pretty sure I remember a lot of sets with both when they were both healthy and AK had the keys. Seems that would stress the defense quite a bit not knowing if Hishaw is coming at them up the gut or if we’re going wide with option or Neal. We could be getting Neal in motion as a decoy or to get him the ball in space in the passing game. Seems to me that would get our best players on the field and create a lot more options the defense would have to account for.

On defense, I think we were all worried about generating a pass rush and the readiness of Warner/Brinkley/Jobe. I was hopeful Borland could perhaps evolve a bit and create a sub package in passing situations that might allow our better athletes to bounce around and blitz similar to how Young used Brandon Perkins back in the day. Maybe get an DT off the field and slide Robinson inside. Instead, Warner is being asked to play with his hand down and clearly isn’t ready to be handling every down duties against the run. Just no creativity to put athletes in good situations to go after the QB. And it’s killing us in obvious passing situations as seen on the last two drives yesterday.

News and Notes Grimes on attacking the middle of the field

When asked about throwing a lot to the perimeter:

There are times the defense can do things particularly, when you're talking about throwing the ball down the field, if you're seeing a lot of single high, one, cover three, which we are. Then there's a deep safety in the middle of the field. That makes it hard to throw it down the field in the middle. If you're seeing more of your zone pressure, three deep stuff. then there are seams underneath. If you're not, you're seeing three and four man rush with three deep. Then there are a lot of people underneath in those zones as well. Sometimes the best place to go is out there. But I think we've tried to spread the ball. And to some extent, the defense does dictate where the best spots are.

Sports radio, Neuheisel story

I was listening to Rick Neuheisel, whether we like him or not really doesn’t matter. But, he was talking about one of his favorite experiences as a coach. He was HC at Washington, they were 4-5, not where they expected to be at that point in the season. Oregon, Oregon State, and Washington State were their last three opponents, and all of them were pretty good teams at that time, WSU was top 10.

He reset expectations, their new goal was to win the northwest. It caught fire with players and fans, people were making home made Tshirts with check boxes. They won the last three games and got to a bowl game (lost to Purdue).

We all had dreams of greatness preseason, we are now 1-4. However, this isn’t a bad team getting blown out by 30 points every game. This is a pretty good team losing close games on mistakes and poor decisions.

As HCLL had said in more than one press conference, some of this is fixable. The real question now is will we make fixes and can this staff “reset” this team like Neuheisel did at Washington.

I sure hope so, because I have been going to games for decades, good or bad, and I am not quitting now.

Hishaw is #20. Find something he is sensitive about and tell him that right as you break the huddle

Devin is the motion back.

Then if we are insistent on bubble screens, mix it up and have Devin catch one with Doug Emilien opening up some space. Neal with the ball against favorable numbers on the boundary is a good thing.

Agents

Had a conversation with a friend of mine who works for an athletic department at a P4 school and was talking to him about NIL, getting/retaining players and he said when it comes to higher end high school kids and portal guys it’s all about relationships with agents now.

Agents are now funneling players to certain schools where their players can make immediate money, play early and raise their value for future college earnings, or put top end guys in positions to be drafted. In return the school attempts to protect the client from being poached by other agents.

More schools are now going to the GM model with added support staff for GMs to be able to communicate more frequently with agents and develop relationships that benefit both sides. GMs are taking coaches evaluations and working with the collectives to allocate how the money will be distributed based on need. Then negotiating with the players agent to get something done.

Agents are also doing most of the reaching out behind the scenes to other staffs to broker transfers for their clients. He also said that there is almost never direct contact between a coach and a player on another roster, it’s all through friends (Gage Keys situation) or agents.

Anyway, thought it was an interesting look at how f’d up recruiting has become behind the scenes and how complicated it has become to coach/manage a roster.
