Quick Take: Cam Pickett was one of the top receivers on the board in a deep group that Terry Samiel wanted.
Pickett started his official visit on Friday, and I heard there were more lined up. There were several schools going after him and he decided to end things fairly early based on the opportunities he had.
I heard they did a good job with him on the visit between meeting with the coaches and players. Running back Harry Stewart was his host and he got along well with the players. Also heard Jalon Daniels was involved as well.
But this goes back to the job Terry Samuel did with him. Samuel got on him early along with several other schools. I talked to people close with Pickett and was told he had multiple offers but he wasn’t big on posting them on social media.
Samuel was able to get him in the first week the portal opened and closed him.
Breakdown: The Jayhawks needed this one. Pickett can help in a lot of ways because he can do a lot of things. He is good in the open field and the offense needs some players who can be game breakers.
Pickett has the speed to outrun defenders and get YAC and he also has some wiggle. This season he played 564 snaps and was graded out as 83.0 running the ball. Ball State used him the run game on jet sweeps and reverses. On the season he carried the ball 17 times for 170 yards and 2 TD. They tried to get him involved in different ways.
He had 528 yards receiving on 49 catches and his long was a 65 yard against Buffalo. He will have two years eligibility remaining.
Picket missed 2023 with an injury but came this year to post solid numbers. I asked people who saw him play and was told he does a good job blocking.
What this means: The Jayhawks need receivers and Pickett is someone I hoped they could land. He will be someone who can do a lot of different things, and I am interested in how Zebrowski and Lubick plan to get him the ball.
The offense needs at least three quality receivers from the transfer portal. This is a good start for the receiver group in the portal.
