News and Notes Updates from Kotelnicki and Borland

The win has brought some confidence.

But they can't listen to the noise and it is easier to block out negative noise than positive. Can't let it be a distraction.

It has been a lot of fun for the players.

Kotelnicki said Casey might have the best hands on the team backing up what up Daniels said.

Daniels played like a veteran and threw the ball well.

There was no secret game plan "they just went out there and played well."

Did job protecting and had balance. He said if they can created TOs and take care of the football you can win games..

Talked about Joey Gilbertson playing well.

Said they like the two point play they ran and they actually ran the same play a few plays before that.

TCU has guys up front who can create pressure and the LB are good.

----------------

Borland

Said the team needed a game like that. Changes your outlook and gives you hope.

The guys have put in a lot of work. "To get some payback and reward."

They talked about playing with more tenacity and although they gave up a lot of points they created turnovers and got off the field and gave the offense the ball back.

Jacobee's INT before half was big. They didn't know if Texas would try to throw that late. Borland said he called a safe defense and Bryant made a great read.

First half was good but not the second half. Execution faltered down the stretch.

Texas is explosive on offense and only team they didn't score a lot on was Oklahoma State.

Said they have a good plan and TCU will spread you out and try to play with tempo.

If Morris plays he is capable and looked really good beating Baylor.

Love this development in the program

At all levels of the program, I see and hear the attention to detail. For example, in player interviews you repeatedly hear them politely accept compliments but then mention how a teammate's actions (on the play they are getting praise for) really was a difference-maker in it being a big play at all. (Trevor Kardell talking about Joy Gilbertson is a good example). I love seeing this!!! The ability to flexibly look at the micro and the macro is huge developmentally. Also, the growing capacity to have an ambivalent hold (the dynamic tension of good and bad aspects both occurring vs all-or-nothing experiencing) on what is occurring in each game and in the program's development is what a winning culture (also personality) looks like.

These are exciting times seeing positive FOUNDATIONAL growth happening before our eyes.

Rock Chalk!

Off Topic Piper athlete that ran a 4.37

Don’t know this kid personally but tested him myself at the 810Combine with the Zybek lasers this past summer and was shocked to see 4.40 and 4.37 pop up after his 2 runs.

Apparently he got injured partway thru the season and only played a couple of games but even in the limited film you can see the kid can run - anyone know if he’s being recruited by anyone?

News and Notes Updates from Lance Leipold Hawk Talk- TCU week

Leipold said it is a great feeling for the players and fans. Talked about what he saw when he traveled the state listening to fans.

It was a good feeling to walk into the locker room and see all the players dancing and celebrating.

Rich Miller and Jared Casey will be guests at Hawk Talk. Chris Simpson will be the coach guest.

Opening drive was key to build confidence and chewed clock.

Daniels to go in that environment with little practice showed what he can do.

Kyron came up big and his speed is big when they get the right matchup.

They were mixing run and pass and converted big third downs.

Texas got back in the game but KU answered. Leipold said it was big to answer after Texas trimmed into the lead.

At halftime Leipold told his team that Texas can strike quick and they saw how they can move the ball. So told them they have to stay locked in.

Said Daniels was on and Kotelnicki called a good game and put him in good spots.

O.J. Burroughs is one of their best coverage safeties talking about the pick he had.

Talked about going on it fourth down. Had punt blocked earlier. They had played well and wanted to go for it.

Said everyone was excited to go for it and he tried to show confidence and that's how they want to move forward.

Going into OT Leipold said he told the team it is back to a 0-0 game. Wanted to be on defense first and with new rules.

When it came down to going for two and what he was thinking Leipold said you are playing to how you feel and not who you are playing against. They had just scored and they knew it was coming down to one play.

After scoring the 2-pt the refs told Leipold to stay back. Leipold said he was just trying to keep control. In an emotional game after the win he wanted to make sure they won with class.

When they went to Hays for the Hawks and Highways Leipold met Casey's family. They were at the event.

Lot of people in the national media have reached out to him because they know where the KU program has been. 255 texts once he turned his phone on after the win.

As they talked with Daniels and his family they talked about momentum for the program and for him. he called them "healthy" conversations and they came to the conclusion he would play.

They view Daniels as a QB recruit this year because he was a 17-year old playing and has time left in the program. Leipold said at the end of the day he told Daniels, "this is your decision."

Had text messages from Bielema, Clausen at Wake, several coaches he coached against in the MAC.

Just a quick status check on the Republican Party

Nothing to see here. Just the usual stuff. A GOP Congresswoman verbally attacking her work colleagues. Republican Congresspeople voting what is best for their district and receiving vile death threats from angry Trumpers. Republicans defending people who tried to overthrow the US's democracy. A US Senator joking and exploring about his state seceding from the nation. Republicans spreading misinformation about a virus that has killed over 700,000 Americans. And a Republican Congressman tweeting out a video of him murdering a colleague and the President of the United States.

You know, another day with unhinged seditionists in the henhouse.

Coach Self on Dajuan Harris

Self sees something special in guard Dajuan Harris

A season ago, Dajuan Harris, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard from Columbia, Mo., averaged 2.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. In 30 games, Harris shot 46.3 percent from the field, 56.3 percent from behind the arc, and 72.7 percent from the free-throw line.

This season, Harris is averaging 4.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. He’s shooting 36.4 percent from the field, is 0-of-2 from behind the arc, and 0-of-1 from the free-throw line. Self, on Wednesday afternoon, talked at length about Harris.

“(His teams) Always win,” said Self. “Even in practice situations. I think that in our first 10 quarters of scrimmaging, his team was 10 and 0. I think he's got a great feel. I think guys like playing with him. I think he makes the game easier for others. I think he probably understands more how to play than a lot of other guys do. But I don't think that he's shown yet what a good player he is. I thought against Michigan State, he's pretty darn solid. I didn't think the other night he played near that well. He's not going to take a ton of chances. We have a better chance to get a shot every possession if he's that team's point guard. But somebody else can be the guy to score the ball or do something that gives the appearance, that that guy, that maybe he's outplaying him.

“The guy that's playing against him in three possessions could have six points and one have zero and one still totally control the game,” he added. “He's one of those kinds of guys. But I think there's a consistency factor that he's got to improve in and take better care of the basketball. I saw some carelessness here of late and we've talked about it, but he's just a good basketball player. He's not going to jump off the page at anybody, but you're just going to look up at the end of the day and just say, "God, they're just better with him on the court."

When asked if Harris reminds him of any past players, Self had plenty to say about his talented point guard and how he compares to others that came before him.

“Yeah,” said Self. “I know what you mean. Somebody that can make a team a lot better without scoring the ball. You can maybe make a case for Travis Releford, like that a little bit. I'm just going off memory here. So, this is off the top of my head. Positively make a case for Aaron Miles, positively, maybe more so than any other guard we had. Whether Aaron scored two points or 16 points, it makes no difference. He just needs to be out there.

“Yeah, Russell (Robinson),” he added. “Yeah. Russell's a good call. Russell's a really good call, Chris (Theisen, SID). I told our team this. The best high school player, I believe that we've recruited still is Sherron Collins. And he didn't start, because Russell, the team was just really good when Russell was in the game. But it wasn't because Sherron did anything wrong. Sherron, as you guys remember, he broke his foot. We got on a roll, so Sherron settled into that six-man role, which was perfect for our team. As opposed to maybe Sherron starting and Russell not. But Russell was one of those kids that no matter what, God dang, there's just a security blanket out there when he was the game. That's a good call, Chris.”

Dead Money

From Jan. 1, 2010 to Jan. 31, 2021, public universities in FBS conferences paid out more than $533.6 million in dead money to head coaches and assistant coaches in football and men's and women's basketball, according to an analysis of financial records obtained by ESPN through state open records laws.

The total also does not include any payments that were made to coaches who had previously been fired beyond Jan. 31, 2021. Of the 130 FBS programs, 86 provided records, four had no responsive records, 22 are private institutions and 18 either provided no records or incomplete data.

Auburn ($31.2 million) and Nebraska ($25.8 million) led the way in dead money payments, followed by Texas ($21.5 million), Ole Miss ($20.4 million) and Kansas ($20 million).

Power 5 programs included in the survey of public universities -- those in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC -- accounted for 88% of the dead money. The SEC led the way with $151 million, followed by the Pac-12 ($114.1 million), Big Ten ($106.8 million), Big 12 ($58.8 million) and ACC ($40.0 million).
