Big 12 Conference Race

Baylor starts off with a win at a much improved ISU team.

With the TCU game postponed , Ku starts off the Big 12 schedule at OK State, then they play at TT, and then they play ISU at home. Actually the next 4/6 are on the road.

Tough way to start the schedule out especially with Baylor already having a Road win. It’s a long season and road wins are a premium.

it’s a long season but 6-0 would put them in a great position.

edit- KU will be done with TT by the end of January.

Off Topic Shouse

Anyone on here either built one or know someone that did, I would be interested in hearing their experience, names of reputable builders, cost as compared to stick built, etc. I have done some googling on the subject but any input or advice is welcomed.

Thinking about the possibility of buying an acreage and having one built. TIA

If the Big 12 has 14 teams for two seasons, that is going to add some crazy scheduling dynamics to 2+ seasons. Like there will be some teams that don't play each other for a possible 3+ years after this season. I imagine the league will create two 7 team divisions; this could be an entirely different thread/poll itself, considering the non conference games but that may happen right here. (For example, will the teams play 8-4 like the ACC and SEC or 9-3 like the Big 10 for conference-nonconference games)

And I say 3+ years because there is talk about how there could be a 2nd round of realignment, depending on everything. I know that enough of you are banking on being in the Big 10 by 2025, but right now, KU will be in the Big 12 in 2023 and 2024. What happens in 2025 can be discussed after some clarity is pieced together and presented.

If you feel like there is another dynamic that should be included other than geography and rivalries, feel free to post about it. No matter what, here is a rough map of the 14 team conference, for reference.

Off Topic Crawford to the portal

Anyone know why she’s leaving KU? She seemed to be a crucial part of the future of KU Volleyball.

Sources close to the Kansas volleyball program confirmed to the Journal-World on Friday night that reports of sophomore middle blocker Caroline Crawford’s plans to transfer were accurate.

LAST GAME FOR OKLAHOMA STATE:

On December 18, Oklahoma State lost to Houston, 72-61. Bryce Williams scored a team-high 17 points, but no other player scored in double-figures for the Cowboys against the Cougars. Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe and Avery Anderson chipped in nine points each, while Isaac Likekele and Kalib Boone scored eight points each. Donovan Williams added five points, Keylan Boone and Bernard Kouma chipped in two points each and Rondel Walker finished up the scoring for OSU with one point.

As a team, Oklahoma State shot just 18-of-50 (36%) from the field, 3-of-19 (15.8%) from behind the arc, and 22-of-32 (68.8%) from the free-throw line. OSU lost the battle on the glass (39-35), committed 24 fouls, dished out seven assists, and committed 18 turnovers.

BILL SELF ON OKLAHOMA STATE

“Yeah, yeah,” said Bill Self when talking about how familiar he is with this Oklahoma State team. “They do. You take Cade Cunningham out of the equation; I think it's basically the same team. You had Bryce, and you add Moussa Cisse and you add a couple more. So, you lose the number one pick in the draft, so obviously you don't replace him with one person. But they've replaced him with a group and they've had some unfortune in that they haven't had all their team together all the time. And, of course, it's hard to get rhythm when that's the case. I guess they're COVID clear, and we expect them to come out and have great energy and they haven't played in about two weeks, and so you could say, "Could that be an advantage to us?" Or you could say, "Well, they'll be more turned up than they've ever been," because they're so excited to play. And plus, it's the first conference game. They'll play athletic, I do believe that. I think they're very athletic.”

OCHAI AGBAJI ON FACING OKLAHOMA STATE ON TUESDAY NIGHT:

“It’s always kind of a rough game,” Agbaji said. “They’re always amped to play this game. It means a lot to Coach (Self) too. The past years, we’ve been successful there once and lost the other two times. It’s definitely going to be a good challenge. A good road test to start of the Big 12.”

OCHAI AGBAJI ON FACING ISAAC LIKEKELE AND BRYCE THOMPSON:

“He’s a really different player in the aspect of creating plays for others,” said Agbaji when asked about Likekele. “He’s not really one to look to score, but he can still get his if he wants. He’s still a really dangerous player in the game of their offense (and) defense because he’s a really good defender too.

“It’s going to be exciting,” he added when asked about facing Bryce Thompson. “We played Latrell (Jossell) earlier. Now we have Bryce and you have Tristan (Enaruna) next Tuesday. It’s going to be fun playing against those guys. It’s not bad blood or anything, but it’s just exciting to see former Jayhawks, former teammates and going against them, trying to get the best of it.”

OCHAI AGBAJI LOOKING FORWARD TO BIG 12 PLAY:

“Even before we were talking of conference play, we had some preseason games left,” Agbaji said. “Telling them that this is a different season. It’s going to be amped up. The guys we’re going against are to the same athletic ability as we have. It’s going to be a challenge every night.

“I think that’s the thing that separates teams from other teams in the conference,” he added. “Because it is so tough and there’s so much talent.”

Recruiting Update Another smart move by the staff

I talked to Gilyard and Craig Young tonight.

They are both coming in earlier than expected. When I started looking at dates I see there is orientation for grads and under grads as early as Jan 10.

I wonder if the staff told all transfers they would like to have them in for it. Gilyard and Young coming early. Brilliant move by staff to they them on campus early.

“Fixing” College Football

I know there are a lot of people that say money, transfer portal, etc is killing cfb, but IMO it’s the lack of parity. If you gave me 5 schools to choose the next 10 national champions from I’d feel pretty confident I could do it. If you gave me 10 I’d feel close to 100% that my list would include every national champion.

So how do we fix this? What about an inverse correlation of wins vs total scholarships. Idk what the exact math would be, but say have a look back period of four years and every season you won 10 or more games you lose 5 scholarships so the Bamas of the world would be down to 65 total, and if you win less than 6 games you gain 5 scholarships per year so the KU’s of the world would have 105 scholarships. Then have some type of in between so averageish schools keep between 75-95 scholarships and I think within 5 years you would see an insane change. Even a top of the mountain USC went to average real fast when they lost their scholarships from Reggie Bush.

Now I know the chances of this happening are probably close to zero, but they’ve reduced scholarships in the past so maybe it’s possible?

Looking over the roster, and what is still left- CHAT

I want to start off and talk about what the staff might be looking for and a couple areas personally I think they should go after.

There have been a couple receivers since November who entered the portal I thought they might go after but didn't. Then I heard they won't go after one unless they lose one or two. I will say the receiver spot is one area that I do have some concerns with. I don't know that you have to gave a "go-to" guy but every QB wants one.

And that guy was Kwamie Lassiter. When you look at who the QB looked to throw to it wasn't close. Lassiter was targeted 78 times and the next closest was Arnold (48) and Wilson (46). He was the guy.

I do have some concerns who will be the leader and I just don't know if I see someone getting the percentage of targets Lassiter did. The problem is you had 12 receivers on scholarship and that takes up a lot of your numbers and doesn't allow you to go after many. There are too many scholarships tied up with the WR group and there are other needs.

The biggest area of need is defensive end. I can still see them taking two and if the right number comes up, taking three. I believe Amir Siddiq is still in the picture. He told me the staff has stayed in touch with after his official visit. If KU doesn't go on him I think he will end up at Charlotte or Coastal Carolina. Lonnie Phelps is still talking to a lot of schools but KU has been recruiting him the hardest.

I think one area the staff may still target a high school player is cornerback/safety. I will know more about this in the next week.

The focus will remain on defense although if a quality offensive tackle comes up I think they will be open to adding one.

Now, here is the most interesting part. I have said they have 11 spots left to fill. And that is accurate. However, to use all of them they will need spots to open up. Right now, I believe they have seven to eight of those 11 available right now. But to use all 11 they will need some more players to leave. Saying that, I think this will be the last year we are talking about the 85 number because they will be at the number.

The coaches are expected to return to the office this week although I am not sure they have had much of a break because they are constantly looking at players in the portal every day. Then there is the convention and after that there will be a weekend of official visits if they want to use them.

If they are going to bring in Phelps that will be the weekend to do it.

Let's chat it up if you have any questions but a lot will still be determined and who they offer.
