With the Mike Smith decommit, does the staff make a hard push for Gavin Meyers? I would love to find another in-state LB who flies to the ball just like Joe Dinesen and Heeney did. Also, a huge plus having a wrestling background in my opinion!!

We basically played 7 guys - the starters and Wilson and Lightfoot. Self said after the last game he was not going to put people in just to put them in. He said he was going to play the guys that gave us the best chance of winning. That's the Self we all know, and we knew it was coming.

First, he was diagnosed with COVID and immediately exposed a significant number of people including a number of Gold Star families.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball will be participating in Native American Heritage Celebration culminating Saturday, Dec. 18 for the Stephen F. Austin game set for 7 p.m. inside Allen Fieldhouse.

This is the second Native American Heritage Celebration of the 2021-22 season as KU women’s basketball recognized and honored Native Americans at its Nov. 14 game against Tennessee State in Allen Fieldhouse.

The upcoming event will honor past and current Native American Jayhawks. Activities began, on Monday, Dec. 13, when KU men’s basketball assistant coach Jeremy Case was presented with a Star Quilt by the Native American community prior to practice. Case, who played basketball at Kansas from 2004-08, is a member of the Choctaw Tribe. Case’s mother, Rita Newton, and son, Malachi, were also present for the Star Quilt ceremony that included Native American representation from the University of Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University, and local leaders. Case and head coach Bill Self each received handmade Jayhawk medallions during the ceremony.

For the Stephen F. Austin at Kansas Game:

The Haskell Indian Nations University Color Guard will present the colors for the national anthem.

There will be a canned food drive with proceeds going to organizations that host food distribution programs for the Native American Community in Lawrence, reservations in Kansas, as well as students of Haskell Indian Nations University. Organizations that will benefit from this canned food drive will range from the Indian United Methodist Church of Lawrence, Kansas, Boys & Girls Club of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, as well as the Kansas City Indian Center.

There will be Native American tabling throughout Allen Fieldhouse to help educate fans on Native culture, traditions, etc.

A special halftime presentation by Native American Powwow Dancers.

I knew it was coming soon and so did Self, as he alluded to it on Thursday. Wasn't always pretty and they really pushed us to the wire with toughness and gritty defense but we need to learn how to play and win these types of games. We aren't always going to just run teams out of the building and are going to have to play tough grinders. This was a step towards learning how to do that today and we found a way to avoid the upset. Definitely a good experience for the team as we approach league play. Improving defensively will be the key to our season!

The mid major we played who plays most like a Power 5 with a traditional big (Iona)

Dave just isn't a versatile player unfortunately. So when we play teams who aren't conventional Power 5 he's likely to struggle. He cant play those small quick opponents. We also know he can struggle against a certain type of long athlete that we only played last year against Texas and USC.

So there you have it. That means Dave is probably just going to be a match-up dude who will hopefully get going in Big 12 play because of match up, but unfortunately has a cryptonite that I hope we don't see in the tournament. Because if we do the stats show you what will probably happen..

Kansas head coach Bill Self On the win ...

“They had us off-balance and we couldn’t guard their second big the way we play and tried to do it differently and it didn’t work. We’re lucky to win, we outscored them by 18 at the free-throw line so that was very fortunate. They outrebounded us, our offense led to their points in the first half, in the second half they just shot the ball so well. They’re a good team, Kyle’s got a terrific squad and they were ready to play. They played about like what we did tonight in their last game and got beat and he had them fired up and ready to go. I was happy for them as far as how hard and how well they played and happy to get a win but certainly not anything to go home excited about.”

On the turnovers ...

“It’s about the same ratio if I’m not mistaken on points off turnovers. Isn’t number 14 a good player though? He can use his body, he can seal, he scored with either hand in there tight. I thought he played great. Number four is a terrific guard. Latrell does what Latrell does, make long threes. I really thought that they were prepared, and really more prepared than us and we were forced to win, and I think the crowd helped us. We missed three dunks and then CB charges on that last deal. When are we going to start playing time, score, and momentum a little bit? Ochai, I want him to dunk it. Nobody likes dunks more than me but actually dunk it in a close game in the second half without trying to put it off your neck. We’ll learn from that. Remy makes a big three, celebrates, and we don’t get back and they end up getting a layup. There’s so many things that we can do to become a sounder, better team. I thought we looked like a not a very good team tonight from a discipline standpoint the line up to start the second half.”

On Dajuan Harris’ performance…

“Dajuan has been sick all week. He practiced a little bit yesterday and he felt like crap the first half. I don’t think he wanted to play much in the second half or at least start but we had to play him to win. He made a couple of great passes, the play he made to CB over the top was a great pass. He made his free throws. He did a lot of good things. The way they play you can’t run offense. You have to drive it and we’re much better driving the ball when he’s in the game.”

On the upcoming game vs. Colorado….

“They have a good team. Last time we went out there they made a half-court shot and beat us at the buzzer. They stormed the court and everything so we need to certainly be better than we were then. I’m excited for it. It’ll be a hard game but it was another game that we needed. We needed a game like that today even though it wasn’t pretty, but we need to have a game we can play well but you still have to figure out a way to win. There were some good things, believe it or not today, but we got to be better playing Colorado on Tuesday.”

KU Vball losing Caroline Crawford to portal.

I don't follow KU volleyball a ton, but I have caught several matches on TV this year. So, after the year they had and the potential they showed in the Sweet 16 run this is disappointing and confusing. It is really tough to lose a player who is a young multi-year starter, 2nd team all-conference, and Kansas kid.

Jones’ contract with KU paid him $300,000 a year. There also was a stipulation that if he was hired away while under contract, KU would be owed a $600,000 buyout. Jones left to return to a Texas Tech program where he first built his reputation as a strong recruiter and position coach.

Newly hired Tech head coach Joey McGuire named Jones the Red Raiders’ passing game coordinator and receivers coach. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported Tech’s offer letter to Jones was for three years, with a first-year salary of $450,000 per year, plus a $25,000 pay raise in both the second and third years.

Leipold said he understood Jones’ desire to leave for Texas Tech and move his family back to their home state.

“I do appreciate every way that Emmett handled his time here,” Leipold said.
