When the Ukraine story and transcript were released, the GOP went with their 'get out of jail' card as "there was no quid pro quo." This is a silly requirement because it implies if Trump had merely been asking foreign countries to investigate his political rivals without getting something in return, it would have been fine. That alone is impeachable, but the GOP went with "quid pro quo" as the standard.
The Ds, because they lack political strength, largely went along with the GOP talking point, as did the press. Then witnesses started saying, "absolutely Trump was issuing a quid pro quo," completely undermining their supposed line.
Now you see the GOP shifting to, 'but the process is flawed.' Of course, the process that is being followed not only makes sense and is prudent in this situation, it's also what the GOP themselves wrote into the rules 4 short years ago. You even have conservative 'thinkers' on Fox saying it's the right process.
It's all a sign of a President caught and the GOP doing everything they can to provide smoke to distract and obfuscate the story.
It'll be interesting to see where the GOP goes once the investigation goes into the public questioning phase and their process claims are further undermined. My guess is you'll see more BS like you saw with Gaetz and you'll see Barr trying to release information on his investigations to distract.
