A member of my extended family died a few days ago. He was a WW 2 veteran that fell just short of his 99th birthday. He was in the long range artillery group in Europe. His tour included being a fox hole where a German grenade came in and did not explode. His group watched in terror as two German Panzer tanks came toward them but bogged down in mud, giving enough time to refocus their armaments and stop the threat. He would have gone to Japan but didn’t have to when the Japanese surrendered. The solemn military burial ceremony with the presentation of the flag to family was very emotional. This man and his band of brothers fought under that flag and crushed evil. Their sacrifices made it possible for myopic mediocre NFL Players and other like minded who only see the bad and not acknowledge the good it has represented when it flew over the soldiers that crushed slavery and the Nazis and Imperial Japan and saved South Korea from the misery inflicted on North Koreans. It does not reflect perfection. I ask only that criticism and protest recognize the good it also represents. Remembrance and reflection done.
