I don't know about you guys but it always feels like we're getting 3's rained on us in every game that goes bad, especially all the early exit tournament games and some of the ones we almost lose (Samford).
Meanwhile we supposedly brought in all these shooters and it still seems like more often than not we can't consistently hit 3's. As just some guy watching from my couch, this has always felt like in issue, and after looking at stats I think it still might be an issue.
First, how are we offensively? Not great!
How many times has KU shot better than 37.5% from 3 this year compared to other schools? In hindsight 37.5 is kinda high but if you want to be great you should be around there and i don't feel like redoing this with a lower percentage. KU has done this 9 times which isn't terrible, but being closer to WVU, OSU, and CU than TTU, ISU and Houston isn't ideal.
Arizona - 5
WVU - 7
KU - 9
OSU - 9
Utah - 9
CU - 10
Baylor - 11
KSU - 11
BYU - 12
TTU - 13
ISU - 13
Houston - 16
Our overall percentage is 34.3% which is good for 146th in the nation, one ahead of Iowa State at also 34.3%. Houston 9th at 39.1%, Tech is 15th at 35.5%, BYU 55th at 36.5%, Arizona 311th at 31%, KSU is 120 at 34.8%.
Bill loaded up with shooters this offseason and that hasnt paid off at all. 27.8% of our points come from 3's which is 282nd in the nation.
BYU - 22 - 39.1%
WVU - 39 - 38%
ASU - 59 - 36.7%
Tech - 70 - 36%
KSU - 100 - 34.5%
Utah - 114 - 33.9%
Baylor - 132 - 33%
Houston - 162 - 32.2%
KU - 282 - 27.8%
ISU - 316 - 26.2%
Arizona - 339 - 24.5%
Coit and Mayo are the only players getting meaningful minutes who's 3pt percentage is better than last year. Everyone else is down.
Dickinson 35.4% -> 22.9%
Harris 38.4 -> 30.8
Storr 32.0 -> 28.8
Moore 36.3 -> 33.3
Griffen 39.2 ->35.6
Coit 33.7 -> 36.5
Mayo 39.1 -> 40.5
Yea sure, maybe we're not a 3 point shooting team, but if that's the case then we should at least be a 3 point defending team right? We kind of are, only 6 times KU has allowed a team to shoot 37.5% or better. The issue is the volume.
KU is 211th in the nation allowing 32.1% of opponent's points to come from 3's. Which is pretty wild since we're 9th in the nation in 3pt percentage allowed at 29.2%.
WVU - 39 - 27.4% (yea same rank as they are offensively)
KSU - 71 - 28.4%
Tech - 95 - 29.2%
ASU - 136 - 34.9%
KU - 211 - 32.1%
Utah - 282 - 34.2%
ISU - 284 - 34.4%
Baylor - 286 - 34.4%
Arizona - 300 - 34.9%
Houston - 333 - 36.4%
BYU - 348 - 37.9%
Opponents know to shoot on us, we're 278th in the country with 24.4 3's per game attempted.
Tech - 57 - 20.1
KSU - 67 - 20.3
WVU - 71 - 20.4
Houston - 154 - 22.1
Baylor - 179 - 22.6
ISU - 196 - 22.9
Utah - 262 - 23.9
ASU - 278 - 24.4
KU - 278 - 24.4
BYU - 306 - 25.0
Arizona - 328 - 25.8
So yea, the volume is killing us. Our extra scoring chances are 198th at -0.4. Meanwhile ISU is 14th at 5.6, Houston is 1st at 9.7, BYU is 97th at 2.6, Baylor is 36th at 4.0, Arizona is 72 at 2.6, Tech is 47th at 3.6, Utah is 183rd at -0.1 , and WVU is 163rd at 0.4. and KSU is 223rd at -1.0. It seems like every loss we give up an offensive rebound for a second chance 3 that breaks our back.
Plenty of teams in the Big 12 give up 3's but they counter that by making 3's, KU gives up a lot of 3's while also not being able to score 3's. We also don't help ourselves by not getting extra possessions from loose balls or turnovers like other Big 12 teams. Seems like everyone has the scouting report on Bill, maybe it's time for him to adjust, that or go look at whatever Arizona's doing it cause they're doing something right.
