Quick Take: This is a great way to start off the portal season with a commitment from Bangally Kamara. He was a player the staff targeted from the beginning when he went in the portal.

When Kamara transferred from Pitt to South Carolina, the Kansas staff recruited him. So, there was a familiarity with him from the earlier recruiting process.

Kamara went on his official last week and has been working through recruiting while he is going to South Carolina. He has relied on his agents Darren Wilson and Chase Moss to represent him. After his visit he gave this statement:

“The visit was cool, and I like the opportunity that was presented," Kamara said. “The team seemed to have a nice culture despite the record.”

Kansas staff member Rob Ianello and linebacker coach Chris Simpson were key players in the recruiting communicating with Kamara, Wilson, and Moss. There were several schools involved including offers from SMU, Cal, Mississippi State, Illinois, Purdue and others.

Breakdown: When I go back and watch film on Kamara, he reminds me some of former KU linebacker Craig Young. He’s rangy and can do a lot of things. When Young arrived at KU, he played the bullet position at Ohio State, which is like a safety.

Kamara played the Star linebacker at Pitt, which is the outside linebacker who is asked to man several responsibilities. He can blitz, drop into coverage and he gets to the point of attack quickly. In his third season at Pitt he moved to the Money linebacker that plays more against the run.

That shows his versatility because he can play different spots.

In his last two seasons at Pitt, he started 21 games as a linebacker with 104 tackles including 9.5 TFL, three sacks. In 2022 at the Star linebacker, he had seven pass breakups and an interception.

I expect him to be a contributor immediately for the Jayhawks.

What this means: The KU staff is going to hit the portal hard this offseason. I don’t know how many linebackers they will look for, but they found a proven commodity in Kamara.
