The head of the University of Akron Faculty Senate says the school should stop trying to compete at college football’s highest level.

“We are spending millions upon millions of dollars every year in a vain attempt to compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level,” said William Rich, a law professor and chair of the Faculty Senate. “We ought to be competing at a lower level and at a much lower cost — and perhaps doing it more successfully.”

His comments followed the announcement late last week that the school was cutting $40 million in expenses over the next three years, including eliminating 215 positions and chopping the baseball program.
