Something I am a little bit surprised that isn't getting talked about in the redshirts being pulled thread - Clyde McCauley did get his RS pulled...but he was playing TE...yes a 6' 5" 290 lbs TE. I have an idea of what is up, which will go into in a little bit, but yesterday when I saw a #83 out there I was like who is that? Then swore I saw McCauley III on the back of the jersey...then was like um he isn't a receiver then checked the roster and sure enough he was listed as a TE - a little surprised this isn't getting some talk...
Something else I am a little bit surprised isn't getting a lot of talk - anyone notice how the offense changed from when Cozart and Willis was in there? I have seen some mention of the routes Cozart was throwing to, but this is pretty significant IMO. I still think Cozart has looked pretty good when he has been in there...and the reason is Likens is only running stuff he knows Cozart can do. When Willis was in...he was running stuff Willis can do. Maybe this is a minor moral victory and really is more common sense than anything, but I find it really encouraging that we have some staff members in place that know what their guys can do and run stuff that they can do (didn't feel this way under Weis).
That being said, one thing I am a little bit concerned about is the musical chairs that has been happening on the OL....on the other hand, I am kind of not concerned with it. Now if a guy is struggling, I understand replacing him with someone else. But something that has drove me nuts the past few years under Weis was he early season shuffle of the OL as it felt like he didn't know who his best OL were. Now something I think could be a little bit different this season, it could be a situation where they are trying to get some underclassmen some reps at times as I have seen Joe Gibson and Jacob Bragg get snaps at times. Something will talk a little bit more in a bit is I am curious if we start to see a young core of guys develop here and play from here on out in a few games, of which I could see that happening on the OL.
Did Brandon Stewart have a pass completed against him? I am sure he did, but I don't remember many passes being thrown his way. I checked the stat line and he had 3 tackles (1 assisted), so if he did have some passes completed against him, I don't think it was many. That's pretty encouraging to me as he was pretty wild early on with his assignments but am thinking he is beginning to settle into the CB position.
On Friday, I posted a thread that I thought things were going to start changing after the ISU game. Some didn't like the thoughts in that, and I can completely understand why, but I think even more strongly that we are going to see some changes sooner than later. Burning the redshirts of Duckworth, Martin, and McCauley in this game is a sign to me they are going to be getting a lot of young guys some snaps in the near future, which makes some sense because we have some rough games ahead of us. I think initially it is garbage time after we get handled early on, but by the end of the season I think we see some more young guys getting some starts or big time minutes by the end of the season. Look at McCauley playing TE - why would he play TE? Maybe they are trying to duplicate what Baylor is doing with their big TE, but I think they are having him at TE to provide more protection on the OL. And why would they do that? It tells me they are planning on playing a less mobile QB more like Willis. It's a sign to me we are going to see over the next few games this staff try to develop a young core of players we can depend on in the near future because truth of the matter is when we are sitting at something like 0 - 8, you have to start building for the future...and I think we will be doing that starting some young guys over veterans...
