It's the future of humanity of course. Their interstellar empire is controlled by a military beurocracy called the Militrant. OMNI is like a space CIA but they are a uniformed branch of the Militrant. The civilian government is called the "Union".
The president of the Union is a puppet of the director of OMNI, Jarek Jakkom.
They get into a war with their rivals called the Imperium. It's a war they can't win. The Imperium has a more advanced fleet and is out for total revenge from a past Union conquest.
