I posted a thread a while ago about how the direction of the country was up to the GOP. That the only way to stop a full blown insurrection/civil war was for the GOP to turn away from the hate, violence, and white supremacy that lead to January 6th. There is basically nothing the Ds can do - this was incumbent on the GOP and how they wanted to proceed.
We saw almost immediately that the GOP was wanting to still support the insurrectionists by their votes against Bidens election, but there were glimmers of hope with McConnell hinting he might place blame on Trump, and McCarthy fully placing blame at Trump's feet.
Fast forward a few days, and McCarthy has made a trip to Trump to kiss his ring, Gaetz has flown to WY to attack 'bad' Rs (hilariously, Cheney), McConnell and most of the Senate GOP wrongly claimed the impeachment was unconstitutional and refused to go along with it, and members of Congress up and down the ranks circled the wagons around the Boeberts and Taylor Greenes.
In all honesty, to me, I think we can clearly see the government - and therefore the US - is headed for ruin. There is always hope for a massive change of direction, but as was said in the House, 'the enemy is among us' and that's completely true. People who fomented an insurrection are not running from it, and in many cases doubling down. They are keeping supremacist-in-chief Trump as their head. The Romneys are so few they can be counted by name from memory. We are in the midst of a pandemic, economic recession, and massive global challenges and the GOP refuse to participate - instead taking time to fly around the country to stir up the base. A fight almost broke out on the House floor, talk of distrust not just of their colleague's positions, but of the colleagues themselves is being openly discussed. Republican parties around the country are taking up slogans echoing QANON slogans or positions.
