We must rebuild from the bottom up

I watched the game and in the first quarter was hopeful we might be competitive in the game. I was wrong. The roster is the problem because we just do not have much talent. While the offensive line seems better than last year but there are many tough games ahead for the players to prove themselves. Kinner is a pleasant surprise and has proven he has BIG 12 talent. Even the receivers look better this season as compared to last season. The big problem is finding a QB to get the ball to them. Place kicking is consistent even though it is done by committee. Special teams seem organized. The defense has been..........bad.

It is plain and simple that we do not have enough talented players to compete this season. We can shuffle what we have from week to week to find the best among those we have and to gain experience for the young ones but it will not do much to change our record. The final result of the season is already pretty clear. The solution is to follow the words of former coach Mark Mangino, just keep sawing wood. Restocking the roster to the point of being able to compete in Division 1 at some level will take 2-3 years. We need to maintain a staff and stay with set systems during that time so the players we have can master their positions. Hopefully we can find players, overwhemingly high school players with the size and talent to compete in the Big 12.

Reasons for our situation can and have been endlessly debated but here we are folks. The rays of sunshine will likely be few and far between during the next three months so all we can do is saw wood during the week and hunker down on Saturdays while hoping for the best.
