I'll be the first to tell you that I don't know enough about the UK election process. But they seem to have elections every 5 years but their PM can start a process to call a snap election.

I believe Boris Johnson is betting that the Conservative Party will gain enough seats to allow him to do what he wants (Brexit, remove health care from as many people as possible).
It looks like Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party was in danger of losing some working class support but that may have changed since the CONs started threatening NHS - their nationalized medicine.
Results should start coming in a couple hours from now. It may end up in a majority for the CONs but still very possible to be a hung parliament again.
