Told myself not to do it, but did it anyway

Dear Diary,

Rewatched UNLV. Let me relive it for you.

We played near perfect football for the first 29 minutes. You can’t tell me this team isn’t good. We’re getting 9 yards per carry from Neal and Jalon is 7/8 with 2 rushing TD’s.

17-6 KU, 3rd and 11 with 46 seconds left at the UNLV 44. Not in field goal range. We call timeout to stop the clock. UNLV would have let it run. Jalon throws an inexcusable interception. UNLV TD to end the half.

Second half we start the same way we started the first half, two Devin Neal rushes, but this time UNLV is ready for them. We trade three and outs with UNLV.

Second series for KU Jalon throws what is arguably his worst interception of the season on our own 25 yard line. Middle linebacker is right there watching him. Much like his first pick, the ball is thrown 2 seconds later than it should have. These throws are not on Grimes. Jalon is not reading the field fast enough. Up until this point Grimes has called a great game. Defense continues to play well and holds them to a fg.

The next two series for us we have early penalties that push us back in our own territory and we are too scared to take any risks to try and actually get the first down. Crowd is booing.

Meanwhile, the defense is 4/4 in the 3rd quarter on causing UNLV to go 3 and out.

Then comes the 4th quarter…

KU wakes up and is driving down the field. Jalon connects with Morrison, Kardell and Arnold and Neal has some good runs. 2nd and 1 from the UNLV 16 yard line. We throw a sideline screen to Grimm that we have no blocking for and UNLV has 4 guys ready for it. 7 yard loss. 3rd and 8. Next play Grimm is wide open headed towards the end zone and Jalon throws it to outer space. We settle for a FG, 20-16 KU.

11:22 left in 4th

Burroughs picks it off barely out of bounds

3rd and 9 and broken play, QB gets 20 yards

1st and 10 we strip him, have 5 guys touch it and they recover it for a 9 yard gain

2nd and 10 and another broken play and QB runs after being touched 3 times and still gets 11 yards

QB throws while hit with no one near the ball but Devin Dye tackles the WR for no reason

4th and 1 at the 2. QB sneak gets nothing but they never blow the whistle and eventually they get a yard as we strip it but somehow they get the yard and we don’t get the ball even though there was no whistle.

5 mins left 1st and goal inside the 1, but they get a 15 yard penalty and instead of first and goal from the 16 it’s first and 10

They get a first down after two runs, then we get 2 TFL’s. 3rd in goal from the 12. Broken play we miss two sacks and qb gets 11 yards to the 1.

4th and goal at the 1, they call a TD and it’s reviewed, can’t see shit, play “stands” 1:55 left

Game ends after unorganized and undisciplined 2 min drill.

Jalons turnovers turned into 10 points for the other team when we lost by 3. Do we win if he protects the ball? Yes.

However, just like the Illinois game, after all of the turnovers we still had the lead with the ball in the 4th quarter and couldn’t get the win. We can’t close and we had uncharacteristic penalties. The blame has to be on everyone, and it starts with the head coach.

We have beat every team we’ve played, but two of those teams are ourselves. We are a good football team and we just need to get our heads out of our asses and get focused on doing our job. We are proving that we can’t handle the expectations, and once again that is on the head coach.
