Shay’s Slant: Three thoughts after No. 6 Kansas beats Texas, 80-70

1) Udoka Azubuike was a load in the paint against Texas

-- Kansas big man Udoka Azubuike was the man in the paint against Texas on Monday night. Azubuike scored a game-high 20 points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked five shots against the Longhorns.

Offensively, Azubuike was 10-of-11 from the field, but had a rough time from the free-throw line. The 7-foot-0, 280-pound center, against Texas, was 0-of-4 from the free-throw line.

While Azubuike struggled from the free-throw line on Monday night, there’s absolutely no doubt that he played a major role on both ends of the court against Texas.

2) Graham, Mykhailiuk and Young went out on top

-- Playing inside historic Allen Fieldhouse for the final time, seniors Devonte’ Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk, and Clay Young went out on top. Young, who played just four minutes, was credited with one assist against the Longhorns.

However, Graham and Mykhailiuk had far different outings on Senior Night. Graham scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out 11 assists, was credited with one steal and committed four turnovers in 40 minutes of action.

Graham, for the game, was 4-of-9 from the field and 2-of-4 from behind the arc in his final appearance in Allen Fieldhouse.

Mykhailiuk, who scored 17 points, pulled down three rebounds, and dished out two assists in 35 minutes, hit 7-of-11 field goals and was 3-of-5 from behind the arc.

Being that Kansas clinched the Big 12 regular season championship outright, Graham, Mykhailiuk and Young, with friends and family in attendance, couldn’t have picked a better way to go out on Senior Night.

3) Garrett coming along nicely for Kansas

-- Freshman guard Marcus Garrett continues to impress during his first season in Lawrence. On Monday night, Garrett, in 25 minutes of action, scored 11 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists, was credited with three steals, one block and one turnover against Texas.

Offensively, Garrett hit 4-of-7 field goals, 1-of-1 shots from behind the arc and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Without question, Garrett was one of the most impressive players on the court against the Longhorns.
