Mitt Romney loudly booed at Utah Republican convention
Romney was the only Republican senator to vote twice to impeach former President Donald Trump.

The few Republicans who represent sanity are pretty much asterisks at this point in the GOP. They hold little to no power, they are hated by the base, and their attempts to stop the crazy are the Dutch boy at the dike after the dam has broken.
If you were Romney or Murkowski, what do you do (I do not include Collins in that group as she is a faux independent to me)? Do you stay with the GOP and keep fighting to right the ship? Do you concede the GOP is the party of ignorance and crazy and become an independent? Do you jump to the Ds?
My thoughts: The GOP is the party of Trump, and that's it. Even when Trump is gone, the spawn of his crazy, hateful, and ignorant rule will live on in the Noems, DeSantis, etc. I don't think long-time Republicans will want to jump to the Ds, not just because that's a big jump, but also because they'd lose at home if they did.
While I don't think a 3rd party is viable in the US given the entrenchment of the two parties, with as evenly split as the country is anyone going Ind. has the chance to be a powerbroker and dictate (like Manchin) through who they caucus with and what they allow. In that there is enormous power.
RM may know, but I'm not sure about the possibility of staying an R and caucusing with the Ds.
