Yeah, it was so long ago it's hard to remember. It was, in part, the spark for the tea party, and the cover for so much Republican intransigence under Obama. But for those not paying attention, our deficit in 2019 was over $1T, at $1.08T.
That's pretty amazing considering we're not in economic strife, like we were when Obama took over. Trump of course promised it would be easy to balance the budget and he'd do it in virtually no time. Strangely, 'no time' must literally mean never because 2020 has started with us increasing the deficit by 25% over 2019, and projections have us blowing past $1T.
And before anyone says, "but you didn't care under Obama," I'm not blowing the whistle on Trump here. I'm pointing out the not-at-all-shocking hypocrisy of everyone on here, the right wing, and the Republicans who only howled from the rooftops about the need to reign in spending when it was a D in the WH.
Funny how, as the chart below shows, the deficit tends to head in the right direction under a D President, and the wrong direction under an R president (at least for the past 40 years).
