Larry Hughes must have just flat out beat Mazyck out last week. Mazyck finally got in game but late. For Mazyck to get in late that means he wasn't hurt or anything.
Memphis started in softer coverage and then after a few drives started to creep more people in the box to stop the run game. They started doing more man and giving Cozart the chance to beat them with tighter coverage. There were some routes that were open but they missed.
Tyler Patrick runs hard after his catches. He fought for extra yardage. Now I see why he is earning more time.
The Memphis front five was tougher for the OL to keep dealing with than SDSU.
I wonder what Guzman can do with his punting. Kahn struggled.
The special teams units play with a ton of effort. Those kids get down the field and know what they are doing. I think Hyman has done a nice job. Usually it isn't a good deal when teams don't have a lot of depth because that hurts special teams. As depth is built in future they will get better. Bartolotta and Wyman have formed a nice one-two punch so far.
The defense started off with energy and was flowing to the ball. Then I think Memphis started opening up the playbook. I really like what they do on offense. They have a lot of misdirection, QB run game, can run power game, and have quick WR who get open. I'm impressed with the QB. If he was in the Big 12 he would be among the top three in the league. He presents problems because he does so many things. I like what they do. I think in the Big 12 they would be in the upper half overall on offense.
The KU front got pushed around again. I said this last week and I don't know what can be done. They did some stunting up front. They played base. I think the Memphis OL is pretty good, but they took the game over. I thought the corners really struggled. It is hard to be tough on them because before last week they never played a college football game.
Three of the top four tacklers Fish (12), Stewart (9) and Miller (7) were in the secondary. That's a bad sign when the DBs are making that many tackles. Looked like Bowen went with Glatczak and tried to get someone who is in position to make plays and plays smart. They went Allen at nickel and for whatever reason he has taken some bad angles in the first two weeks. I don't know if Allen is a nickel because of his cover skills.
This year is just going to be trial and error all year with the defense. I don't know if there will be many answers. It is obvious after two games the best two inside guys they have right now for the starting line-up are King and Wise. They opened up competition all week and those guys still won their jobs. That tells you they are likely the best two. Maybe Thibodeaux can pad up and go out for a few snaps. I think the DL is going to have struggles all year and it is what it is. You aren't going to be able to improve players that much in the upcoming weeks.
Arnick struggled last week with a physical SDSU team so Dineen earned the start this week. That kid plays with a lot of effort. I liked him and Roberts in there together. Bowen did some juggling with the line-ups and I assume he will do so all year and see who wants to compete and keep fighting.
There were changes on both sides and I think Beaty's hash tag of earn it is serious. By going with Ford he is saying just because lost his redshirt doesn't mean he will always be the second guy in. You have to play your way onto the field.
Before the game I saw Beaty and Fuente talking for a while. When Fuente took over Memphis he had something similar Beaty did in terms of shape with the program and scholarship numbers. He took over a 2-10 program and got four wins in year one. The following year they went back to three wins. Then last year got 10 wins. It took him three years to get a system in place and change things. Now he did it with an easier schedule and also Memphis has some things in place that allow them to take some really good athletes that others schools can't always get in. He's done a nice job and his kids are tough. But that didn't happen right away.
Last thing and what will make Beaty not happy are seven penalties. I know he wants to cut that in half.
