When the spring ended I felt good about the starting group.
I'm good with Justice Finkley on one side and Dean Miller on the other. But then things get unclear.
Bai Jobe, who I had as the backup to Miller, entered the portal. That brought more questions than answers to the two deep. That position will need depth because you have to rest the number one unit and you have to factor in injuries.
The word I got after spring football was Dak Brinkley getting more time at the strongside behind Finkley. Brinkley was more of a pass rusher out of high school but growing into that spot. I think Alex Bray from Illinois was a big portal add in the spring. He's 270 pounds and will be a good fit for the strongside position.
Over the last week I have thought if they will move Brinkley back to the weakside.
The backup behind Miller is wide open. I heard Caleb Redd has a good future but might need more developing. I don't think Dylan Brooks made any move in the spring to improve his stock. They added Leroy Harris from Chattanooga in the spring portal season. He brings length and athleticism with an 80-inch wing span. I know the staff liked his film a lot.
Fall camp will be important to solidify a two and three deep. I will be interested in what they do with Brinkley now that they added Bray. And who will win the backup spot behind Miller?
It is hard to predict the depth chart because outside of the starters everything is an unknown. I'm going to put mine together with the thought Brinkley could go back to the weakside after working at both in the spring.
WDE- Miller/Brinkley/Reed OR Harris
SDE- Finkley/Bray
Post-spring breakdowns:
Wide receivers
Tight ends
Offensive line
Running backs
