I don't know many people who sincerely argue that the police force is fine as is and we just need to leave them alone. Momentum in this country to reform the police seems to cross some of the ideological lines. So what does that look like and what are people comfortable with? Some things I've seen:
  1. Cease the militarization of police;
  2. Disarm many of the police depending on their role;
  3. Divert some funding of police to things like mental health providers to respond to some situations;
  4. Far greater training on deescalation and understanding how and when to use non-lethal - and lethal - force;
  5. Make it easier to fire bad police;
  6. Records of police (reports on bad cops) made public;
  7. All cops have body cameras, they must be turned on at all times, and those videos can be easily viewed by prosecutors, defendants, and the public. Any cop who turns it off is immediately suspended;
  8. Protections for police whistle blowers;
  9. Greater civilian oversight of police disciplinary investigations and reports;
  10. Independent review of all actions that involve a firearm being pulled by an officer;
  11. Banning rubber bullets, tear gas, and other 'riot' response gear that is dangerous;
  12. Removal of qualified immunity and many other protections;
Thoughts on all/any of these? This should be an issue everyone is behind. The far right that is worried about an oppressive state should be worried about the behaviors and immunities of police forces, and the left is worried about the institutional racism displayed by police forces and how that impacts society.
