First and foremost this shows the need for universal healthcare. The problem of 'let the free market decide' is laid bare when a sizable chunk of the 3.3 million laid off last week also lost their health insurance - not the best situation during a national health crisis.
Further, it shows the right's true trust in the free market when the second things get trying, they jump to government assistance and, what they would call, socialist policies.
We are learning the true value of 'low-wage' workers.
This is precisely why all the climate change, health, scientific 'we'll deal with the problem when it gets here' or 'we'll slowly respond to the challenge without hurting the economy' responses to national and global crises are hollow. The US needs to find funding (cough, cough, Defense) to fully fund scientific needs and to act when experts speak. Presidents for years have largely ignored fully funding our national health programs, and we are currently ignoring our climate change needs. Preparation isn't glamorous, but it more than pays for itself in the long run.
Where are the billionaires and 'job creators' I've heard so much about that are the so called creme-de-la-creme of society? Bloomberg spent over $500M on his failed election campaign. How much has he spent to save lives through purchasing and donating medical supplies, paying for people laid off, etc? Billionaires fall all over themselves to attach their names to vanity projects and purchases, where's the similar drive for something that is truly socially beneficial? They didn't get to be billionaires by caring for and supporting society.
The fact some school districts in the US didn't want to shutter because they were the primary source of nutrition for their students is appalling and shouldn't be happening in the US.
Our pandemic response shows the need for a strong federal government.
I never want to hear the far right cry again about valuing the sanctity of life. If you considered sacrificing the lives of the elderly to stop the stock market drop, you do not value the sanctity of life.
And like clockwork - every party the world over does this - we are seeing the right start to implement policies and actions under the guise of a crisis. Eliminating environmental regulations is robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Monday morning rant over.
