I am and have always been a KU football fan. I have stuck with the team through this free fall we have been in since winning the Orange Bowl. We kept getting worse and worse, each step of the way. If it didn't live through all of the painful experiences, I would probably look back at them all and laugh.
If KU were a stock on the stock market, now is the time all of the experts would change their recommendation from sell to buy.
I believe that going 0-12 this year, and then getting snubbed by the home town kid is rock bottom. KU Football stock may be at an all time low, but now is the time to buy. Everything goes in cycles, and I believe that we are finally going to start our next up-cycle. If you don't believe in cycles, ask an Alabama fan how he felt before Nick Saban got there. Ask USC how life has been since losing Pete Carroll. Or even closer to home, rememer how bad we felt after a few years of Terry Allen.
There are a lot of different pieces that are about to start coming together very quickly to turn things around. We appear on our way to having serviceable depth at QB, which most teams don't have. To my knowledge, the air raid offense hasn't failed anywhere. It is not 'if' this offense will be successful, but rather 'when' it will be successful. There are young receivers and young quarterbacks who will grow together with on the field experience that other teams will not have a year or two from now. The offensive line is becoming more physical, and there is not an OL coaching void anymore. That doesn't even take Dom Williams into account, who might be the best running back the program has seen since the 1960's.
The truth is that our offense should start putting up serious points, meaning that our defense wont have to be great. We will only need to be solid on defense to start winning games, but I think that we will be better than solid. Our LB group is starting to look like it will be pretty salty for the foreseeable future (Long looks like a beast, and Dineen can knock a guy into next week). Armstrong will anchor the line, and I have confidence that Perry/Bowen will rebuild the secondary depth that you need in the Big 12 - because they have both done it before.
The new housing should make it easier to recruit, and the 2017 class is looking like they will get on campus right has the the momentum starts to get into full swing. Dom Williams will be a very special player, but he is just the tip of the iceberg. I think other kids see his talent, and want to come play with him.
The reason why I decided to post this tonight, on the eve of National Signing Day, is because I think losing out on Bledsoe will prove to be a blessing rather than a curse. He bet on the wrong horse. If he chose KU, he would be perceived as the programs savior. When the reality is that the program is about to make some huge strides whether he is here or not. But rather than the credit going to a kid who may not have deserved it, the credit will go to the kids who sign tomorrow and a year from tomorrow. Kids like Long, Mayberry, Willis and Williams are our future stars, and that suits me just fine.
It is about to become fun again to be a KU fan, and I can only imagine how fun it will be to play for the KU football team. Memorial Staduim will soon fill up with band-wagon fans, but none of them will appreciate it as much as us who have been here for the low of the lows.. and we as fans won't get to feel the satisfaction and accomplishment that the men who will sign tomorrow and a year from tomorrow will feel.
