Now that millennials are the largest segment of our population they had better start paying attention to any issue that affects the economy. They need to become educated as to what our political leaders did following WWII to drive our economy upward. The job growth when looking at the number employed looks good. When looking at wages it sucks. The growth came from things accomplished by both parties. Both blue collar and white job growth were good. Today the term "skilled labor" labor does not come close to what it used to mean. Today's younger workers will not see employer retirement plans and healthcare plans that the older generations had. A dollar today is not even close to what it used to be. They just cannot take a dollar today and adjust it for inflation to argue this. Why, because of the cost of living a life of what I think are expensive basics. Things such as cell phone. My generation have land line phones that were leased and cost about 20-25 bucks a month. We didn't have cable TV for 200 bucks a month. And there are lots of other costs today that older generations didn't have. And yet today the blue collar jobs don't pay what they used to pay. The millennials can't follow someone like Bernie Sanders and demand free college. There is no "free" in this world. There is no "free" healthcare.
Why do younger generations need to pay attention? A very good example is the woman's march into the workforce. Up until about the start of the 70's a man's wage was a "family" wage. For example, dry cleaners picked up and delivered cleaning. The employee doing this raised a family. As the women marched into the workforce in great numbers employers slowly did away with the "family wage" and led us into the ' single person" wage. This led to today where only a very small portion of the marrieds can exist on exist on one wage. And it all happened because no one was paying attention. Whose problem is it that college is so expensive? That didn't happen overnight. But it did happen because no one was paying attention.
IMO the one thing that the younger generations should do is get involved. Regardless of your party leanings demand that once your elected you work to solve problems and not develop new ones. This includes all those we elect at all levels. The whole idea that what needs to be done is do away with the electoral college, impose term limits, etc. The answer to all our issue is not elect and forget for 2-4 years but elect and monitor, demand and hold accountable those that are elected. If millennials want to be more like Europe then consider what country will replace us to be the true world protector of the free?
