I have to admit, I am looking forward to the tournament this year because I have absolutely no expectations for this Kansas team.

I have never been in this position as KU fan. I was not a fan growing up like many of you and I knew very little about KU basketball before I started looking at schools to go to growing up in Texas. KU was my backup school to Texas A&M, until I stepped foot on campus for a visit in March of 2005. Before that point, I didnt imagine going anywhere else except Texas A&M and was hoping I was going to get denied so that I had the excuse to go to KU. So when A&M gave me conditional acceptance in their “Blinn Team Program” I opted to go to KU.

I had to learn about everything, my roommates couldnt believe I had no idea about the class coming in that year with Rush, Chalmers, Downs and Wright. I had no idea why we hated Mizzou so much and realized it when I saw the football game on campus that year. I got spoiled with our football program when I was a student which led to me being a die hard for our football team. The decade plus we went through in football humbled me as a fan.

The moment I realized how special Allen Fieldhouse is was when we fought back against Oklahoma in 2006. I will never forget that game.

The last couple of seasons for KU basketball has also humbled me, because I never thought I would see these types of teams from Bill Self. I never thought we wouldnt be the bully.

I told my wife when we first met that one of the worst days for me every year is when Kansas loses in the NCAA tournament and she got to see that when we lost to Michigan that one year.

The most devastating loss to me will always be the VCU game. I still believe if they win that game, they win it all. Then the tourney being cancelled in 2020.

This year I just dont see our team putting together a run and Im just going to enjoy whatever happens. We have been spoiled by Bill Self and I dont think some appreciate what he has done enough. It will be a hard day as a fan when he hangs it up no matter how good the coach might be that replaces him.

I am hopeful about next season, watching Darryn Peterson’s highlights has me real excited.

Here’s to enjoying the tourney this year with no expectations and hopefully watching these boys fight hard to the end despite their shortcomings as a team.
