How will walk-ons work starting next academic year?

@shay and/or anyone that has the info, I've been wondering about the impact on walk-ons of the new NCAA rules setting # scholarships = # roster spots, that # being 15 for Men's Hoops.

KANSAS currently has walk-ons G Noah Shelby, F Justin Cross, C Will Thengvall and G Wilder Evers on the roster, all with at least one more year of eligibility.

As I understand it word is that Shelby will have a scholarship next AY.

And KUFB recruit G Jaden Nickens will be taking up a basketball roster spot next AY as well, even though his scholarship will count against KUFB.
Will Nickens represent the future of "walk-ons", 2 sport athletes that don't cost the lower tiered sport a scholarship but still take up a roster spot?

Allowing for the above and the latest portal activity, KU has 5 rides out of a penalty shortened 14 scholarships to give for next AY.
(I believe that Nickens will actually count against the 15th roster spot, as the NCAA penalty was a loss of scholarships, not roster spots, which historically weren't a factor in NCAA penalty deliberations.)

Will our other walk-ons be back and get one year rides if Bill does not use all 5 rides available to him?

Or will Self & Co use all 5 remaining rides, and then create a never traveling, off roster "walk-on" practice squad that stays in Lawrence, but helps the guys "on roster" (as I think that will replace "on scholarship" in the near future) in practice when the team is on campus?

Appreciate any insights into this still - at least to me - murky area ahead.

TIA!
