I know we are all excited for the conference season to get started tomorrow, but I wanted to share some thanks and a quick shoutout to Greg Gurley after an incident that occurred with my father during the Brown game last week. Shay, I know you have multiple lines into the program and would appreciate you extending my appreciation to Greg if at all possible. A lot of takeaways here for my family - people helping people, Jayhawks looking after Jayhawks, culture of the people and the program, etc.
To set the stage, I am from the Houston area and had planned to come home for the Christmas holiday with my three kids. Grandpa and Grandma were really going to make a weekend of exciting firsts for my kids with the Chiefs playing the Texans at Arrowhead on Saturday and Jayhawks playing Brown at the Fieldhouse on Sunday. Those plans ultimately fell through as one of the kids fell ill that last week of school before their break and prevented us from traveling.
However, Grandpa is never one to miss a Jayhawk game and decided to go with his brother (my uncle). This probably wasn't the best of ideas (since I would not be there) because my father's health has been declining here for the past several months. I have honestly tried to get these last few memorable experiences with my father in before things get really bad.
I am not sure the exact timeline or events that followed as my father has no recollection, but just after halftime, my mother received a call from the EMT team at the Fieldhouse that my father is being taken by ambulance to the hospital. He was found in the bathroom in a disoriented state with a couple of bumps and lacerations as if he had fallen.
We later come to find it was actually Greg who was with my father and alerted the Fieldhouse medical team. He has since reached out directly to my mother to check in and wish her and my father well.
I apologize for the long post as I don't really make any, but felt this is a situation in which Greg's quick action and compassion deserved recognition.
Rock Chalk.
