Off Topic Gary Woodland

Holy crap Jake Knapp went low. His swing is so long and loopy it’s wild, saw a slow mo breakdown recently on the golf channel.

Gary’s got work to do.

Ok, finally watched the Full Swing episode with Gary last night, really good. Also the next one about The President’s Cup and Camillo Villegas and wife story, geez, talk about human interest stories about how hard life can be!

That’s what makes these shows, Drive to Survive, Full Swing, Break Point, etc so good, you get to see the lives of the real humans that exist behind these professional athletes. You hope it helps more people understand that they’re just people like us but you wonder after seeing the nonsense with Mayo.

Gary’s tee time is Thursday at 7:13 AM CDT from Tee 1 at The Players Championship. He’ll be playing alongside Rafael Campos and Davis Riley.

He has not done well at this tournament in the past. Here are his finishes over the last five years:

• 2024: Finished 72nd

• 2023: Tied for 54th

• 2022: Missed the cut

• 2021: Missed the cut

• 2020: Tournament canceled after the first round due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Tomorrow? I thought it started Thursday?? Also, ESPN+ is covering MULTIPLE featured groups. Don't have any names yet, but it's worth checking up on.

Also, the new season of Full Swing dropped on Netflix today and there is an episode on Gary. Initial feedback is that it’s really good and a tear jerker. Starting to watch it now.

I just finished Gary’s episode and it’s one of the best yet out of all 3 season. This season was pretty meh up until his episode. They got away from a lot of the behind the scenes stuff for the first 5 episodes and it just seems like a lot of highlight reels for a couple guys each of them.

Gary. Woof. +6 and T135 after the first round. 10 shots off the lead. Maybe he should take some more time off? I know he has struggled at this course in the past.

"I don't understand this golf course," Woodland said. "This is my 13th time playing here. You practice around here and you get up there and you think, I can post a number today and for some reason it just kicks my ass every time."

Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, has one top 25 finish (T11 in 2014) here and has missed the cut six times.

Thursday, though, presented another challenge. The rough, he said, was as thick as he's seen at The Players, and as thick as he's seen on Tour this year. Twice he was inside 170 yards and was force to chip out of the rough.

"Maybe they didn't mow it after that rain on Monday," he said.

"This golf course exploits you pretty quickly if you're just a little off. Even the par 5s, you think you can get there and if you miss it coming into those greens a lot of the times it's almost better to lay up," Woodland added.

Gary isn’t really the layup type of guy.

Gary teeing it up tomorrow morning at 7:30 at the Valspar Championship. He's not in a featured group, but he might get a little coverage in the main feed.
In the horses for courses theory, this might be another tough week for Gary. I hope I’m wrong, he needs some more top 20’s.

Gary birdies his last hole and will play the weekend. At -1 he is only 1 stroke out of being in the top 20.
He’s -2! 😛

But you are right, he is in the thick of it! Hopefully he gets some coverage tomorrow.

Gary could only manage even par today. There are birdies out there. Spieth made 7 birdies, and JT had 6 birdies and an eagle.

He had 4 other birdie opportunities within 12 feet, two of which were around 6 feet in length that he burnt the edges on.

He really needs a putting coach. I know Faxon is with Rory now, but he could be two shots of the lead if three of those four roll in.

Still a solid round on a tough course.

With recent events, our guy has fallen to 90th in the Fedex Standings. He could really use a sub 70 final round tomorrow for a decent finish and some critical points. Even a 69 should put him in a decent finish based on where the scores are now.

Gary had a dead-straight 6-foot birdie putt on #4 but pulled it left. Even the announcers seemed surprised he missed it. At the time, the make would have moved him to T17. He’s currently T44, but has another birdie putt coming up on #8.

Disastrous ending for Gary. Bogey followed by a double bogey on 15 and 16. Went from T27 to T47. 😔

Oh Gary…I hope it’s just not being in form yet vs his brain issue causing his poor outings.

I believe Gary is playing again this week.
You are correct. Playing on a former major winner exemption. Here is some additional info:

Texas Children’s Houston Open:

Here’s how Gary has finished there the past three years:
  • 2024: T21
  • 2023: T9
  • 2022: Missed the Cut
Here are Gary’s strokes gained per round at the Houston Open over the last 5 seasons (10 rounds):
  • Off the Tee (SG: OTT): +0.242
  • Approach (SG: APP): +1.103
  • Around the Green (SG: ATG): +0.266
  • Putting (SG: P): -0.602
  • Total (SG: TOT): +1.008
So if the the horses for courses mantra comes true...COULD be a promising week for Gary. 🤞

Not that it matters, but Scheffler and Rory have signed up to play as a last tune up before the Masters.

Gary is ALSO playing in 2 weeks at the Valero Texas Open.

Gary Woodland, also a four-time winner on TOUR, including the 2019 U.S. Open, will return to the VTO for the first time in three years. In six appearances here his best finishes are a pair of T8s in 2021 and 2022. The Kansas native recently received the PGA TOUR Courage Award for his inspiring comeback from brain surgery that is chronicled in this year’s “Full Swing” on Netflix.

Gary had a good chance for a solid round today. He was 2 over on his first nine. He brought it back with 4 birdies. But then he made a bogey on a Par 5. Three under would have looked prety good.
