http://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...ncaa-tournament-deal-cbs-turner-extended-2032 Tourney has been extended to 2032 BUT here's some interesting comments from the article.
"Provisions in the agreement protect CBS and Turner should the tourney start to look very different. But network executives hope this deal itself increases the odds that March Madness marches on mostly the same.
"One reason we're confident the tournament will remain the premier event it is, is the financial underpinning that CBS and Turner are providing to the NCAA," CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told The Associated Press."
In an era of off-the-court turmoil for the NCAA, the unknown is how long the tourney will endure as a big event. For now, it's a very attractive one to CBS and Turner.
"There are clauses that the tournament remains the premium tournament that it is today, the destination for Division I basketball schools to play in and compete in," Levy said. "If that changes in any way, shape or form, there are clauses that will allow us to have conversations if that's necessary."
I could be reading way too much into it but seems to me the P-5 are readying to demand a larger share of the money and less propping up of the tiny schools. I also think the P-5 are creating behind the scenes rumbling of a new tourney, which would effectively kill the ncaa tourney. What are the ratings going to be for the ncaa tourney without Kansas, UNC,Duke, Kentucky, etc? What does this all mean? It means KU's basketball program is even more attractive to the B1G and ACC. Only strengthens a case for KU that was a pretty strong case to begin with.
For the"football drives everything" crowd then take into account that Nebraska and Texas A&M were the only schools to switch conferences that are football powers. Methzoo,Rutgers,Maryland, and Louisville are not needle movers in football.
