Col. Arturo Molina, after the 1977 Presidential election, took his right-wing paramilitary death squads and tortured and executed many civilians, anyone who remotely was linked to the demonstrations against the blatant corrupted elections that entire decade.

These death squads were funded and trained by the CIA and US Military. The CIA actually gave intel to key dissidents to gather them up, torture and kill them.

In 1979, a faction of the military killed the president in retaliation for allowing this to happen but it made virtually no difference. A year later 50+ people who went on strike were executed. An Archbishop sent President Carter a plea for help stating "Christian to Christian…[aiding the junta] will increase injustice and sharpen the repression that has been unleashed against the people.”

Carter ignored it and sent the junta more money and resources, the justification was continue to reform against the leftist opposition. A week later that same Archbishop was murdered.

Reagan takes office, nearly 400 children of the 800 civilians were shot down, stabbed, and decapitated in El Mozote. The women and girls were raped first. Reagan told congress about a month later that he was doing his best to comply with international human nights.

The Church in El Salvador had reported by then that 600k civilians were refugees and had to flee, with 30k dead. The US still funded the right-wing death squads and ignore humanitarian rights and law.

A couple years later over 50k+ El Salvadorian troops were trained in Ft Benning, GA.

Throughout the 1980s priests among many civilians were murdered. A million civilians were displaced with hundreds of thousands fleeing to the US alone; around 75k were murdered in the end. The civil war ended in 1992.

If the US had simply not meddled with these countries a lot of them would have not have been in here in the 1980s and 1990s and still continue to come here today. That is not up for debate.
The US had spent around $6 Billion to "stop communism"
