I spent many years working in college athletics and understand the nature of some fans and their conditional loyalties to the coaches and players on the teams they support. Despite that history of involvement, I find myself disgusted at the treatment of Coach Self by some KU fans right now because of a few unexpected losses. The success doesn't measure up to these fans expectations and they are quick in their assessment that he's lost it and KU needs to push him out the door. He’s won over 80% of his games, 17 conference championships and two NCAA championships but he's not good enough anymore. He's suddenly forgotten how to coach. I once heard a successful head coach say you work to build a monster of a program and that monster ends up eating you. There are no better coaches out there than Bill Self. He's someone who's sustained a level of excellence that would be difficult to match. People need to calm down and reevaluate their expectations. If you believe you can replicate his consistency with success by pushing him out and gambling on someone else, you likely lack an understanding of what is happening in college basketball. The days of dominance are over. We've got a hall of fame coach and I'm proud he sits in the KU bench. I believe strongly that Bill wants to win another championship and then walk away. I believe there is a good chance it will happen. I'm sorry we have a group of fans give up on him and jump off the bandwagon. He deserves better and those fans who have lost faith better be careful of what they wish for.
