I am NOT a HOF head basketball coach, hell I have never coached a basketball team, but I feel I know enough watching KU basketball for almost 40 years. With that said, I get coach wants to run on offense, but if you have a 7'1" center that has a vertical of 10" and is on the slow end in terms of speed before the tip-off even happens. Also, a wing that gets beat about every possession on the defensive end. Why not try to play a zone and then double down on the Toppin's, Roberts', Veesaar's of the Big 12?
I remember the Creighton game (seems like seasons ago), when HD was hedging up top of the key and they would just dump it down to Kalkbrenner for a dunk (at least 7 times). Wouldn't you rather let a 30% three point shooter, shoot, then a 99% throw down dunk?!
Last night, HD (who is good) had zero legs (less than normal). Veesaar really took it to him because he was much quicker. Mayo's legs were gone from the <8 min mark. And, i know they played 45 min the night before....but
Unless, a opposition goes bonkers from three (which an adjustment can be made) you stick with it and see what happens on the offensive end. And, hopefully, it would lead to less opposition offensive rebounds.
This team gets beat late, more often than not and I believe it's because of conditioning.
I just miss Self's surprise triangle-and-two or box-and-one. To me this team would benefit from going to a straight zone. Just some thought, I know it's easier said than done...
