Quick Take: McGary has been to South Dakota State, Troy, Iowa Western and Utah State. KU will be his fifth school.

One reason the KU staff knew about him was Chris Labidou is now the offensive line assistant to Scott Fuchs. He was coaching at Utah State with McGary on the roster.

McGary told me he the main two reasons for leaving was getting closer to home and showing what he can do at a higher level.

He spoke highly of Jordan Peterson and how he hung in it with his recruiting. McGary had options. Auburn and UCLA recently reached out to him and he said he narrowed it down to KU, Illinois, and Memphis.

Something McGary told me stood out to me. He said he was researching KU's team and program and noticed Kenny Logan. So, he started following Logan and said that was someone he would like to play next in the secondary.

"I've seen Kenny Logan Jr., and I noticed him on the roster and noticed him in the media as I've been researching that stuff," McGary said. "So that's definitely a guy I would love to get a chance to play with and line up with against opposing teams."

Breakdown: I have asked around and it sounds like McGary might start out at corner but has the ability to play safety. He has played different positions at different schools.

"When I was at South Dakota State and Troy, I was a corner," he said. "At Iowa Western, when I was in junior college, I played both. And then this last season at Utah State, I started the games at free safety, but I was playing everywhere. So I can't really give you a straightforward answer. It's kind of wherever they need me. But I feel most comfortable manned up, mirroring routes and guarding the other team's best guy."

The staff has built up depth in the secondary and they have several players like McGary who can change positions if needed.

What it means: I think this officially ends the transfer/portal season for KU. From what I can tell McGary is the last one they will add. I did hear rumblings there could still be an OL as a possibility but have not heard much lately.

With the new 25-man rules that will be in effect the next two years picking up players like McGary with one year left. You can add a player who has gone through division one programs and it can help the roster right away. Then next season you can repeat the same process. You will see teams do this for the next two years.
