Quick Take: I’m just going to say it… this one of my favorite commitments in the class. I happen to know quite a bit about him since I have some contacts close to the program.
First off I will start with the thing I hear most is he is a high-character, great work ethic player. He’s one of those kids who doesn’t do much wrong and is great to coach.
From everything I heard this really came down to KU and Stanford in the final two. But his relationship he built with Daryl Agpalsa and his visit. He told me after the official visit:
“The visit went amazing," he said. "I really like the coaching staff and the players I got to meet and hangout with. The new facilities are very impressive too and overall very impressed with the coaching staff and culture of the team.
Breakdown: There is a great story about Mercer as a freshman. North Texas opened their season against South Alabama and the first series of the game their starting center breaks his hand.
They call on Mercer to come in to play. From there the rest was history. Mercer took that opportunity to go on and become a Freshman All-American. That week of the South Alabama game the coaches voted him the offensive player of the week.
The people in the North Texas program love Mercer ability and his attitude.
He was the highest-rated offensive lineman on the team with a 68.5 PFF score after playing 565 snaps.
He was described to me as strong, athletic and a very smart player. The fact the Jayhawks get him for three years is icing on the cake. I’m calling my shot now; he is going to be a good player in the future.
What this means: I think they will look at one more offensive lineman. They have Melvin Siani visiting tomorrow who is fresh off a visit to Oklahoma State. But some of the names on the original board are starting to thin out.
