Several kids/taking adults killed. Geezus.

Two questions - where was God? Thought that with Tang knowing where he’s going to be coaching next year that God would have had time to protect innocent children.

Also, where are all of these tough Texans with their guns? Didn’t they relax the conceal and carry laws so these tough guys could carry whatever they want wherever they want? You have a chance to save lives and you chicken out? What a bunch of pussies. Classic tough guys with guns.

Watching the press conference, lots of praise for 1st responders, thoughts and prayers and talk of the deep faith in the community. How do guns and religion ever mix? It makes no sense.

That press conference was a joke. Prayer and faith mentioned ad nauseam and the victims barely a mention. First responders mention was fine but 9 effing people are dead. So we’re supposed to be thankful that tens of kids weren’t killed??? And took no questions. What a joke.

There’s video of the beginning of the massacre. Killer calmly gets out of his car near the sidewalk and immediately opens fire on the people walking by with a rifle. Killer is decked out in tactical gear and unloads tens of rounds within the opening seconds.

There’s video of the victims of his opening salvo. There’s a child with their brains literally spilled out on the sidewalk. Nearby is a man with the bottom half of his face blown off. A few feet away are more bodies, twisted and bloody.

People have posted these videos on Twitter, and others are demanding them to take them down “out of respect for the dead.” I say **** that — Americans need to see exactly what the Republican Party and the NRA has done to our society. Those bloody corpses piled up outside a suburban H&M are the cost of our fetishization of firearms and enabling anybody to easily acquire a weapon of war.

Another tough one to read and watch. So many shootings even in these RED states, where good guys with guns are suppose to prevent these from happening. Won't work. May stop a few random ones. I am not saying BLUE cities are much better either. There are just too many mass shooting deaths happening. Nothing will get done to prevent more shootings. Zero movement at all to prevent shooters from getting guns. Probably zero movement to increase funding for mental health or hotlines for these shooters to possibly call. Just more thoughts and prayers and some darns, people will just go onto the next one or get sidetracked by something else stupid in the news. No impactful prevention again.

While yes it can be good the shooter got shot by police. I almost wish they didn't kill him. Killing these mass shooters is the easy way out. We need to really start studying the why's more. The what ifs in these people's lives. Then maybe show these mass shooters continously videos and pictures of the victims they killed every day in their individual cell. Video messages from the victims families everyday, so they start to comprehend what they took.

The ‘good guys with guns’ were no-shows. Most of them are Dirty Harry wannabes who are, in fact, blustering cowards when facing an active shooter.

What a completely insensitive statement.

Sorry but what’s insensitive is a bunch of old white male politicians hosting a press conference after a mass shooting and all they deliver is bluster about praying and a vigil to heal. Nothing about the safety of their constituents, nothing about investigating what drove this psycho or how he armed himself, there was even hardly anything about the victims themselves. That’s insensitive.

You know what else is insensitive? People saying the solution is arming the “good guys” with guns to stop the bad guys. Texas has the most lax gun laws on the country. This mall is flooded with “good guys” with guns. And they all puss out when faced with a bad guy with a gun. That’s insensitive.

You know what else is insensitive? Old white guy republicans taking NRA money and doing nothing to avoid some poor girl from going shopping and leaving in a body bag without a face. That’s insensitive.

GTFO

In Texas you know immediately the profile of the shooter. They'll quickly release the identity of they're undocumented (or think they are) or a minority.

If they don't release the identity right away you know it's a white conservative which is the case most of the time.

Hawker needs to explain to this guy that people need AR-15s so they can defend their homes from multiple armed intruders.

The whole situation of mass shootings is insensitive. This has been going on for at least 20+ years and only gets worse. What had been done to curb these shootings??

People with the power need to really sit down and do a strong capable deep dive into solutions. They need to not end the session until actual solutions get laid out so they can be implemented. Right now we have just talk, promises, thoughts and prayers. Could it be people are offering thoughts and prayers because they have no idea how to curb these shootings?

No, they know how to curb these massacres. There’s just an extremely powerful and well-financed lobby that control one of our two political parties that makes sure the very obvious solutions can’t be implemented.

Gun control is only part of the equation though.

Why are these people feeling this is the way out? Each one is different yet if digging deep enough there will be a pattern. Parental abuse? (There are many forms of this, physical, emotional, neglect to name a few). Bullying? The feeling they will never succeed in life or overcome obstacles needed to succeed or raise their family stature? Video gaming culture? Media culture? Political culture?

Kids and younger people are also a lot more observate and smarter than adults give them credit for. Kids know when parents are having issues at home or their parents trying to hid alcohol abuse. So many factors and not enough digging.

Exactly. Given all these factors, why make it easier for people going through stuff to own assault rifles?

“Solving” mental health is exponentially more difficult than inhibiting the means through which people can easily commit mass murder. People have been mentally ill and prone to violence forever. The easy access to weapons of war is what enables these massacres.

Of course I’m strongly in favor of improving access to and efficacy of mental healthcare. But that’s largely a red herring when discussing the specific issue of mass shootings, which is a uniquely American occurrence because of our uniquely American gun laws and proliferation.

While I agree with what you are saying. Gun reform/control will be immensely harder to get legislation passed. I just never see it happening. People are too stubborn. We see it every day on this board and in life itself. I want it to happen. That is why I want them to at least go at this issue from both a mental health issue and slight moderation of gun control. Neither will happen I know.

I agree, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t loudly assign blame those responsible and hope that eventually it will be addressed by voting out the bastards that prevent any progress from being made.

These massacres are a direct result of the actions of the NRA, Republicans and all those that vote for them. Full stop.

Bullshit, only one side talks, the NRA sycophants.

I think videos and photos of the victims should be broadcast every news network in the country. People should be forced to see the results of their fetish/obsession with AR style rifles.

While great in theory. I see people with mental illness and derangement as watching almost a video game. Who has the highest score today?

Really? That's your takeaway?
With some of the younger generation yes. Look at the culture people 40 and under grew up with. Media, internet, video gaming, and social media all grew exponentially for these people. Their thinking and views are totally different. While it's not all bad, but we as a society viewed this line of thinking as a comical joke, we laughed, but now it's becoming a reality. I hope I am wrong in this line of thinking but I am also trying to think outside the box to see what sticks if that makes sense.

I don’t want to go too far down this rabbithole, but I think these kinds of concerns are misplaced. Violent media has been popular for far longer than the internet and video games have been around.

While most weren’t gory, westerns and war movies were incredibly popular for decades and featured lots of gunplay. Pop novels and men’s magazines featured extremely graphic violence (especially towards women), and such media could be commonly found in barber shops, hotel lobbies and other places men congregated. Violence as entertainment has been an integral part of American culture since at least WWII, when thousands of young men came back from the war with extreme emotional damage.

There were mass shootings before Columbine as well, they were just less common. But the most common factor in mass shootings since then is the use of a particular type of firearm, and it correlates very strongly with when that particularly type of firearm became legally available again.

I do think social media has caused immense harm, but that impact is pretty complex and I’m not sure how much it directly contributes to the overall trend. I think efforts to find a common throughline for the motives of these massacres are difficult and often misplaced.

I can agree on some of what you say. I think to a extent not exploring the rabbit hole is short sighted. Violence media has been around for ages yes. But do you see a correlation with the amount of homes that had TVs back in the western days of the 40s, 50s, 60s and then 70s, compared to what there is today? How many families had multiple forms of media in their homes then compared to now?

I agree everyone thinks of Columbine as the first. There are many before then. First I remember in my state was Moses Lake 1996 at a middle school. Co-worker of mine was in that classroom. He had a rifle and pistol.

Another thought I had on my way home for lunch was, maybe these mass shootings have somewhat replaced serial killers as far as violence goes. You still hear of them occasionally but not near as often as in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

In 1976, a sniper set up in the tallest building in Wichita and shot 11 people, killing three.

The comparison to serial killers is interesting but ultimately apples to oranges, IMO. There’s usually a sexual component to serial killing, and most serial killers, at least at first, are trying to get away with it, whereas most mass shooters are often suicidal or are otherwise motivated by some kind of political or racial agenda. I think ultimately there’s not much similarly between the two, at least as far as the most famous serial killers are concerned.

The ”demise” of serial killing is also a fascinating topic that I’ve read a good bit on. Leading theories is that the huge increase in serial killers in the 1960s-1980s was due to a large increase in children being raised by PTSD-addled veterans and/or nonexistent fathers (and often a very particular type of mother, interestingly); a large amount of easily accessible men’s media focused on violence toward women, particularly bondage; and the rapid increase of mobility in American culture, which enabled serial killers to travel more easily. There’s also evidence that lots of serial killers existed before that period as well, they just didn’t get as much widespread attention and/or simply never got caught.

The seeming lack of serial killers in the last couple decades is largely attributed to the increasing availability of DNA tracing, as well as the general increase in surveillance (i.e. more security cameras, location tracking, etc.). Not coincidentally, those measures are much less effective at preventing one-off, ambush-style mass killings.

Sorry for the long posts, it’s just a really interesting topic to me. My undergrad degree was in psychology.

All one needs to do is study mass shootings from 1994 through 2004 and then 2004 through 2023. Plot mass shootings in those two windows against gun sales, and if the ATF hadn't been hamstrung, specifically against sales of AR-15 type weapons for those two time frames. I would hazard a guess there are some correlations aside from the perceived mental health crisis that is behind these killings.

People under 40 grew up all around the world with those things, though. Why is this problem almost entirely an American one? I think you know why.

I do know why, it is easier access to guns. Sometimes though you have to make others eliminate all other avenues that have been making mass shootings more extreme here than abroad. We have half the country practically that are die hard gun fanatics, that wave the 2nd Amendment in everyone's faces. You have to convince them and to do so, force feeding them opposing arguments. So they get that Aha moment. That is the way I was going about it. 2A sadly I feel will never be modified. Again I hope I am wrong.

Silly to blame God, concealed carry citizens or anything else on these senseless mass shootings. There have been evil and mentally ill people since the beginning of time, and as long as we live in a free society where people can come and go as they please these copycat shootings will continue. If anything mass shootings are the product of our increasing God-less society we live in.

And you realize that malls, like this one, are the leftists' stupid "gun-free" places that evil people target, right? It's a fact that concealed carry users have prevented countless murders by killing bad guys with guns.
And lastly, the brave police officer (good guy with gun) should be commended for preventing even more loss of life. These officers are the outstanding individuals whom ignorant Democrat politicians want to defund, and nick hates and teaches his kids to hate. Shame on you, nick.

STFU Nazi Boy, early reports indicate this asshole was on of your white supremacist brethren. You don't have to put your idiocy and ignorance on full display in every single post. Eat a bag of dicks you shit stained asswipe.
