Had a conversation with a friend of mine who works for an athletic department at a P4 school and was talking to him about NIL, getting/retaining players and he said when it comes to higher end high school kids and portal guys it’s all about relationships with agents now.

Agents are now funneling players to certain schools where their players can make immediate money, play early and raise their value for future college earnings, or put top end guys in positions to be drafted. In return the school attempts to protect the client from being poached by other agents.

More schools are now going to the GM model with added support staff for GMs to be able to communicate more frequently with agents and develop relationships that benefit both sides. GMs are taking coaches evaluations and working with the collectives to allocate how the money will be distributed based on need. Then negotiating with the players agent to get something done.

Agents are also doing most of the reaching out behind the scenes to other staffs to broker transfers for their clients. He also said that there is almost never direct contact between a coach and a player on another roster, it’s all through friends (Gage Keys situation) or agents.

Anyway, thought it was an interesting look at how f’d up recruiting has become behind the scenes and how complicated it has become to coach/manage a roster.
