The Obama administration deserves props for not succumbing to the GOP games and continuing with the nuclear negotiations. It's still very early and anything can happen, but two of the big call outs for why we should do it have come to pass.
One, and most importantly, it was said the agreement would hinder Iran's ability to build the bomb. Iran has fulfilled their obligations and experts have said it increased the time it would take for them to build a bomb from a few months to roughly a year (last I read which was a few weeks ago).
Two, and most recently, people supporting Obama said a big reason to continue with the negotiations is to lend support to Iran's more moderate leader as an election was coming up. The hope was that supporting a moderate would lead to more moderates in leadership positions and slowly start to open up Iran. Well, the elections were recently held in Iran and moderates scored an impressive victory.
Like or hate Obama (those seem to be the two options) this deserves to be highlighted as a big victory for his foreign policy and a possible major plus in moving Iran closer to the West.
As an aside, a friend and I were semi-joking how Saudi Arabia and Iran are like a bad rom-com in their relationship with the US. We are dating SA, though they are terrible for us and we refuse to see it. Iran, meanwhile, appears to be ugly (think Sabrina) though underneath the glasses and bad haircut is a beautiful person who is a perfect fit for us. Hopefully this starts the Iran makeover.
