As with most, I came into this season with muted expectations. The team has major deficiencies which are further highlighted by weak QB play. If you have a quality guy under center he can mask some of the issues. I didn't have any hope of this happening with our QBs.
That said, I believe Cozart has performed better than what I was expecting. I still think his true position is WR and will never play at a level KU will need if they hope to compete consistently. But, as of the third game this season, he has been noticeably better than last year. So I guess that is a positive that we all see to be overlooking.
The issue that concerns me is attention to detail and mental mistakes. Four instances this last game were very troubling on this account:
1.). edited
2.). Continuing this penalty theme, our top defensive player made a huge mental mistake yesterday that led to Rutgers putting 7 points on the board. Goodman made a hustling error, I understand that, but getting a horse collar personal foul on a 3rd in long where the QB has pretty much given up on trying to go downfield with the ball is a major blunder. Not to mention, in addition to dragging Laviano down be his collar he grabbed on to his facemask for good measure. Sure these kind of hustle mistakes happen but as a senior captain and the leader of the defense, an error like this is crippling and totally unforced.
3.) Parmalee called for a fair catch and caught a punt on our 6th yard line. I sat there stupefied by the decision. I am still at a total loss why he did this. Plant you heels on the ten and don't even begin to think about fielding the ball if you have to take a single step backwards. I would love someone to explain it to me if I am wrong because I have always thought the ten yard line rule was the standard.
4.) On the final play of our last drive I believe Darious Crawley ran the wrong route which doomed the play from the start. Not knowing the play call is about as basic as it gets. Not knowing it when you're in a do-or-die situation is about as poor a mistake a player can make.
All of these mistakes have nothing to do with skill or ability and fall at the feet of our staff. One was committed by a senior captain and another was by a senior who has seen significant snaps for four years. The excuse of us being young doesn't do it for me. These mental errors have been the most troubling issue this season. I expected the losses, but I had hoped we would place a much greater premium on attention to details and limit mental mistakes. I have not seen as much improvement here which has made me less confident in this program getting turned around.
I am still 100% on board with Beaty but we have to rectify this.
Sorry for the length.
